2.1TD Engine Over-Running When Key Removed

This has now happened twice. First time was Sunday night, and then it's just happened again about an hour ago. First time was when I stopped in the local town to nip to the Co-op, turned the ignition off, removed the key and the engine carried on running for a few seconds then turned off. Did my shopping and then when I got back into the car it started up fine and ran fine, but the engine management light was on. Drove it home, turned it off fine and got in the car the next morning, started it and the engine management light was now off.

Same thing happened today, overran, restarted and engine management light was on, turned off, restarted and engine management light has gone off again.

Anyone got any ideas? It's a 98 2.1TD bog standard engine, bar K&N replacement element and stainless exhaust after the CAT.

Check the oil level out of curiosity. (Remembered previous post by jasper!)

Oil level is fine. At least the gauge on the dials says it is when I turn it on. I also do my own servicing so I know it isn't overfilled, otherwise it would have been doing the same for a couple of months already as I haven't serviced it for a little while.

On the HDi there's a fuel pressure relief valve on the fuel rail which opens and releases fuel back to the tank when you kill the engine - only if it's slow to react then the engine can continue running on the pressure left there. The engine light will come on because the engine is rotating without the ECU's control I think.

Other possibilities are an excess of oil in the inlet tract (maybe you could pull an intercooler hose and see if there's a load of oil in there?) this signifies the engine combusting it's own oil although this usually becomes *exciting* quite quickly :shock:

I know the 1.9's got a fuel cut off solenoid, presumably the 2.1 has one somewhere, otherwise it wouldn't stop running when you turned the key to off. Maybe this is up the creek :?

HDi injectors use electickery to open...

Only just realised, I have a 1.9 to look at tomorrow with a similar fault (no management light on).

I got my Pug with this problem, always running on with the engine warning light, when you have done it please let me know if your solenoid plunger rubber end is missing.

Aha, a likely culprit methinks. Where will I find said stop plunger? What sort of price are they new?

Sounds like the stop solenoid sticking to meeee.

Only other thing that could cause it is oil getting in somewhere (i.e. turbo oil seals) but that would be alot more violent when it runs on haha, so i wouldnt worry about it.

If you know someone with a decent fault code reader it should confirm it for you.


Also...

Might be worth checking the wiring that goes into the top of the fuel pump, it runs quite a long route around the engine. I had one where the wire rubbed through in various places, grounding out and locking the throttle wide open, somewhere in there will be wiring for the stop solenoid too. Dont know if the wire rubbing through could also cause the same thing?

Worth a look anyway as it only takes a minute to check :)

Hi Everyone.
This is quite a common problem on 200 tdi Land Rover engines, it is caused by the use of "city diesel" which wears the inj pump, swarf builds up around the stop solonied and prevents it from closing. The only cure is a new injection pump, and the use of a fuel addative to prevent the wear.

What do you mean by city diesel?

I thought there was only normal diesel and vpower lol

(i say this out of curiosity, and being the owner of a series 3 with a 200tdi in it lol)

Hi,
"City Diesel" was the sales name for low sulpher fuel, this caused no end of problems with injection pumps, and still does on older engines. Rebated (red) diesel has just changed to this, and there are many coments re stopping pump wear on farming message boards. I run an old M A N 8 136 truck to carry my vintage kit around and add a small amount of engine oil to each tank of fuel, so far I have had no trouble.
