Re: 406, great reliable cars!

Sadly, its time to say goodbye to peugout 406 after many relatively trouble free years of motoring. I have bought a BMW 525d. My 406 is for sale now along with a set of alloys with snow tyres fitted. I doubt you will see much of me here once the 406 has sold. Goodbye!!

Re: Starting troubles...

Ok, sorted out. Symtom- starts for half a second then struggles to start problem- fuel pipe split and worn by the sound deadening engine cover. Tiny leak cuasing loss of presure of fuel system. Fix- replace damaged pipe with rubber one sold by the meter. Also had a code for cam and crank sensor sync...

Re: misting up windscreen-water in boot

I still havent fixed the water leaking into the car. It drips down by the rear light cluster on the inner bit of the metal bodywork. Its not the light leaking. I dont think its the roof bars as Ive removed and siliconed them on refitting. Its not the vents down by the CD changer. I dont think its ju...

Re: Starting troubles...

My Mate who is a mechanic recons its the crank sensor. If not then I will look at the HP pump presure regulator. I still have the starting problems. Starts for half a second and then starts OK next time usually. I think the problem was compounded by the tank pump failure but I suspect they are unrel...

Starting troubles...

My diesel hdi 406 starts for a second and stalls. Often starts OK on the second try but sometimes its more difficult to get it going. Tank pump failed the other day but replacing that has not solved the starting problem as I had hoped. Any ideas?

Re: HDI Engine Cover Dampers & Clips

They seem to shear off at the base where the rubber joins the metal. I have successfully glued them back togeather with superglue and they have lasted a year so far.

Re: Car behaving weirdly today...

No I dont think so the indicators played up before and I think that is a comon problem. The central locking is odd though. I thought it was the key pressing the switch when starting some how but now I dont think so. Im not to fussed as some cars have that as a feature although it unlocks itself late...

Re: Camber out / outer edge tyre

The front wheels need to be parallel and rears need to be alligned with the car body. You can do it with sticks and tape measures reasonably well. This four wheel alignment often fails to include the car body which means the steering wheel isnt straight.

Re: Radiator split

I will be sad when my old car finally dies. Its done 185,000 so has some life left if yours is anything to go by! Watchout for that bottom hose though as it does rust and split the radiator coupling causing loss of coolant which can warp the head leading to gasket failure. Two of my 406s had the sam...

Re: Radiator split

Was it the bottom hose? I found this rusts and expands which splits the plastic radiator open. Its worth replacing this as the part only costs £20ish and prevents radiator replacement or head gasket problems.

Re: misting up windscreen-water in boot

You have to take the internal grab handles off and the trims and then fold the lining back enough to get a screw driver in. This has left creases in the lining which is glued in. Im not to fussed about that. I sprayed mine with satin black paint from Halfords. Looks nice. Big improvement as the orig...

Re: misting up windscreen-water in boot

The problem remains so I removed the roof bars, resprayed them satin black and refitted them, siliconing between the gaskets and cleaning up the silicone that oozed out with white spirit. I hope this has fixed the problem but it will take time to find out. If not, im going to look at the aerial next...

Re: Flood damage to my 406.

I was going to buy a can but was unsure which one. they had electrical contact cleaner, carb cleaner & brake cleaner amongst others. I was hoping to get a product specially made for MAF sensors.

So you recon the carb cleaner is best?
