It does sound like the grey spongy bit performs no actual function then ? It's a bit of a funny one because it makes you wonder why they bother with it then if it makes no difference?

I changed my air filter today and the old filter had a grey spongy section (1 cm thick) attached to the bottom of the yellow fins . this seemed to operate as an extra layer or filter? However , the new filter I ordered had no such grey filter. Is the grey bit an optional extra or is it vital? :roll:...
