Re: DIY Timing Belt Replacement
I know this is an old thread, but I used the excellent guide posted by jasper (and Haynes) to do the job last weekend. Encountered very few problems but it did take around 6-8 hours solid work, purely because of the labour involved in removing/relocating thingss plus my inexperience with this job on...

DIY Belt Change
Hi all, the other day I was randomly talking with my Dad about lack of working space around car engines these days, and in doing so opened up my bonnet. I’m glad I did, as there was a piece of thin sheet steel caught behind one of the pulleys, folded over the belt. It was fairly thin but had lots of...

Door Lock Barrel
Hi all, Don’t think this forum is used much anymore – the FB page seems to be the preferred site. Does anybody know if the door locking barrel on the 406 is the same as on other Peugeot/Citroen models? I’ve been trying for the better part of a year now to get two new barrels. I cannot lock my car an...

Re: Door Lock Barrel -- Wanted!
Which part are you exactly looking for? I have 4 complete units in cars I have wrecked and are about to go to be weighed in. I have stripped one unit, not sure what part of yours is damaged from your pics. Reason I ask is I am in NZ so postage for the complete bulky units would probably be expensiv...

Door Lock Barrel -- Wanted!
I am after two door lock barrels for a 406. I don't need the key and I don't even need the housing that it comes in (see picture below) -- it's just the barrel. In fact the only part I need from the barrel is a small piece of metal which sits at the end of the barrel. Both of these pieces have broke...

Re: Unknown Braking Problem
Well.. got the Pug back from another failed MOT. One rear disk was warped, one pad was worn down to 1mm, one front caliper was seized and I think one of the handbrake cables were perished away. I think the sheathing on them breaks down and the inner cable corrodes. All jobs that can be done from hom...

Re: Unknown Braking Problem
I wonder if the pedal return spring has come off or broken? or if something is holding the pedal down? Marvellous cars those I have had several, best cars Peugeot made in my opinion. Peter Possibly! It all looks very hidden and difficult to get to. Think I need to stick my head up there and see wha...

Re: Unknown Braking Problem
Well I made it to Cornwall and back. Currently covered 700 miles and have about an eighth of a tank left -- not bad for an 'old diesel'! The braking problem did occur on a number of occasions (perhaps 3 or 4 times), but I found lifting the pedal up with my foot stopped it happening again. I also fou...

Re: End of the road I guess…
Agree with the k-seal suggestion. My 406 had a split metal pipe from the coolant tank. Cost to replace that with new thermostat housing was about £120 (from memory!). The car sill leaked coolant albeit at a much slower rate, so I stuck some of that in and for the last 700 miles I haven't noticed any...

Re: Throttle and Speeds Sensors
The "DocBackup" disk gives me the following diagram for a HDI 90: The pedal sensor is shown this diagram (note: the diagram is for the "Bosch" ECU, there is also one for the "Siemens" ECU but it lists the same part number for the pedal sensor (16 072 724 80): Thanks so much for that. I managed to f...

Re: Throttle and Speeds Sensors
The throttle sensor is easy to remove - and there may be a guide on here about how to clean it out. The sensor itself has very basic workings inside and filling it with contact cleaner or similar seems to work wonders. As for the speed sensor, I can't help you - not sure if your car has it on the g...

Throttle and Speeds Sensors
Hi all, Does anybody know the correct part numbers for the below parts, to fit a 2001 Peugeot 406 HDi 90? I've seen several and the local Peugeot dealer didn't know! - Throttle position sensor - Speed sensor for gearbox The speedo is dropping to zero more frequently now (at least once every 10 miles...

Re: Re-Programme Key with PP2000
Just thought I'd close this one off. I was never able to get into PP2000. One day I will restart fresh with it as I'd love to know what codes are on the ECU (speedo has started dropping to zero temporarily when driving...) However, the car now locks. I braved it and locked the car from inside and to...

Re: Unknown Braking Problem
The pressure release hole is in the master cylinder, when thr piston goes right back it uncovers a small hole which allows the fluid to run back into the reservoir. Its usually oil contamination that causes the rubbers to swell. Peter Thanks Peter. I'll try and locate it (presume it's near the serv...

Re: Unknown Braking Problem
I was going to say that you have a front brake intermittently binding but if the brake light is coming one that would suggest pressure in the system. A failing master cylinder could cause, if the rubbers have swollen they could be blocking the pressure release hole. Any particular conditions that c...
