Range was 370 miles on a brimmed tank, the range is dropped by pretty much the same amount the trip computer is going up so good so far. Average MPG is now 22. But still I'm happy if I get 37...

Yes the MK3 Mondy is a pretty big car and weighs in at nearly 1500kg. That would probably be why the MK3 is about 1/2 second slower to 60 than the Mk2 with the same engine (gearing may play a part as well.) And probably has worse economy. Try instead of using low revs using not much throttle. Theres no point being just over 1k because the engine will be sticking extra fuel in to make sure it dosen't stall.
