Finished it at last! Replaced o/s spring along with new thrust bearing, nuts bolts etc. Spring was from local factors and made in Sweden by Kilen (probably made of chocolate-soon to break), drop link by Quinton Hazell, thrust bearing also by Quinton Hazell. Thanks for the info dogslife but still don't understand how to do it. I need an idiots guide starting at No 1 ie "Turn on computer" with very explicit instructions thereafter. I do live in rural Lincolnshire and don't get out much these days because car often needs repair.

Took spring off strut again and had close look at thrust bearing-the oil I had poured in had done its work, bearing starting to separate, casing top & bottom very, very thin and frilly due to water and subsequent tin worm.
