When I fitted a towbar to my 2001 estate I used a normal wiring kit and scotch blocked to the loom. I
haven't had any issues, trailer lights all working ok and no adverse effects to the cars electrics

I do general checks as others, bulbs, wipers etc. Also give it an oil and filter change as it's usually due anyway around MOT time.
Just wish my MOT was in July and not Feb. Laying under the car is snow is now fun:(
