sounds like the tdc sensor wiring.....check where it goes into plug as theyre bad for chafing and the outer casing staying on but no contact on the plug itself. had a friend change a clutch in one and put the plug for temp sensor on to the tdc sensor by mistake as they both fit, just different colou...

sounds like a silly thing to suggest, but is the car getting fuel?
had this prob on a 306 td and it turned out to be the stop solenoid, although i think the hdi's have a fuse that controls this, worth checking tho
