Just turned 200,000 miles now, and no nearer with this problem! I must admit I've been pre-occupied with other things, so this has gone onto a back burner. The engine management light never goes off now, and there is no sudden loss of power - it's totally lacking in power all the time. Maximum revs....

Wanted - OSR light 406 estate

The one in the rear wing, that is, not in the tailgate. It's for a '99 HD1 but don't think an older one would be a problem - can anyone help, please? (The brick holding the dustbin lid in place wasn't heavy enough ........ you can guess the rest!)

What protocol do the earlier (pre '04) HDIs use? I've just found a link to another code reader which is listed by the manufacturer as being suitable for 406HDI models from 1999. If I can find the link again I'll post it! (EDIT) OK, found it now, here it is! http://www.rwmotortec.com/product.asp?prod...

Thanks! Did the one your brother had come from the same seller in China? Has anyone else successfully used one of these on an HDI about the same age as mine (99,T)?

OK, I'll have to get it checked, just hate paying out for a diagnosis every time there's a fault! Is there any reasonably priced equipment to allow me to read faults myself? BTW, pity your "shed" isn't an estate!

If either of these items is faulty, will the fault logged identify the item in question, or will it be of a more general nature? I only ask because of my previous experiences with having fault codes read!

Yes, I suspected the air flow meter (isn't there a fuel pressure sensor too?) or similar. I've just changed the air and fuel filters so can rule that out. Doubt whether it would be injectors, it runs pretty smoothly at all times, just loses power. As far as I know an air flow meter is too expensive ...

I'll have a look in the morning if the weather's OK, and let you know what I find. I don't think the turbo is working, but that wouldn't account for the sudden reduction in speed which happens quite regularly. Can a faulty turbo or damaged pipe do that?

406HDI power loss

My wife has a 1999 406HDI estate which has covered 198K miles. she has owned it since Dec 2005. It ran with no problems at all (aircon never worked though!) until last summer, when it was off the road for a couple of months (non-starter, "Electronic Ignition Fault"). Neither the local main dealer no...

Standing in front of the car with the bonnet open remove the large black plastic cover on the left. (Maybe there should be some clips, nothing on mine.) On top of the ECU unit (maybe 5 inches wide) is a black multiplug type connector about the same width as the ECU. Lift the metal clip securing the ...

This may be some help to other members, so here goes! The car is now running thanks to information from Chris at TotalTuning, Pontypridd, S. Wales. After I got the ECU back from him he gave me some info. on voltages from the ECU connector. Several readings were wrong, including 2 pins with battery v...
