Re: Cambelt replaced on 2.1td! Phew what a job!

Yes it is blue. But I think that other loctites may be blue also?! I'm not familiar with threadlock compounds but loctite. http://www.loctite.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/henkel_uke/hs.xsl/fullproduct-list-loctite-4995.htm?iname=Loctite+243&countryCode=uke&BU=industrial&parentredDotUID=productfinder&redDotUID...

Re: Cambelt replaced on 2.1td! Phew what a job!

Well, got the replacement water pump on last weekend and got most of the engine compartment sorted. Fired her up - bit of blue smoke but all sweet after a little chugging. Got all the bodywork back on yesterday and took her off the axle stands. Took her for a spin! all good so far as I can tell! I g...

Re: Cambelt replaced on 2.1td! Phew what a job!

Wow 2-3 hours looks like the consensus from the experts! now I'm embarassed! This one took me about 8 hrs in 2 hr slices, so far! And I've still got to change the water pump and put it all back together! Still no parts damaged and no injuries sustained. I guess i'd be able to half the time next time...

Re: Cambelt replaced on 2.1td! Phew what a job!

I think the 2.1 has less space in the engine compartment hence having to remove engine mounts etc.

Just wondered if any other 2.1 owners had experience of time and cost.

Cambelt replaced on 2.1td! Phew what a job!

Just to summarise my previous posts. Whilst the belt snapped, it was on tickover and so I was hoping for divine assistance in ensuring that none of the valves had taken a hit from the friendly pistons. Well I finally got the belt on today and cranked her over and aside from a little smoke on initial...

Re: How to remove crankshaft pulley bolt?

Final update. replacement belt on and engine running with no apparent damage to valves & rockers. Must just have been luck on the cycle of the crank/cam when it snapped. Now that I know we've not got to take the head off. I can concentrate on remaining jobs. Which are to replace the water pump and f...

Re: Anyone have diag of cambelt layout for 2.1 td

Thanks for the diag. When I got the Gates replacement kit it also had a diagram inside, with the very brief instructions which didn't even touch on how to remove the tensioner! Actually, when you look at the cogs and pulleys it becomes fairly evident how the belt runs, but it's good to have a diag t...

Anyone have diag of cambelt layout for 2.1 td

Plan is to fit replacement for the snapped cam belt on my dad's 2.1 td 406.

Does anyone have diags of cambelt routing over pulleys/tensioner etc. Is it same as 1.9 diag in Haynes manual?

Re: How to remove crankshaft pulley bolt?

Used Jasper method this evening with success! 22mm socket. 1/2 inch wrench. secured against underside of right hand drive shaft using tie wraps. short burst on starter - terrible screech - which I guess was loctite easing off. Then used gears & brakes to hold crank whilst undid remainder of thread. ...

Re: How to remove crankshaft pulley bolt?

Have rotated crank on pulley bolt, the only resistance appears to be compression. Yet i was expecting some mechanical resistance. Am going to give Jasper method a shot. Am taking a view on that the cambelt failing at tickover may not have done any damage in which case a very short burst on the start...

Re: How to remove crankshaft pulley bolt?

Jasper, thanks for feedback. Have looked at realignment of camshaft, inject and crank pulleys and found all alignment holes. Am ok on these. Took off starter motor today to reveal lock pin hole for flywheel and located hole for tdc of cyl 4. Back to releasing the pulley bolt as with a meter long sca...

Re: How to remove crankshaft pulley bolt?

Ah! aligning crank and camshaft pulley, there's the next challenge. But it's like climbing a mountain. I'll deal with this step by step. False peak by false peak. I'm over at my parents tomorrow to lift the front of the car as high as sensible to enable me to get and extension bar on my 1/4 in drive...

Re: How to remove crankshaft pulley bolt?

Thanks, for your feedback so far. I'm to try to get the pulley bolt off this weekend, weather permitting.

Any other posts and tips re. 406 td cam belt replacement much appreciated.

Will update you as to the outcome in due course.

Thks, David

Re: How to remove crankshaft pully bolt?

Have found out it's a td! I'm going to crank the engine over on the pulley bolt and see if there's any unusual points of resistance/noises. If I take the cam cover off, would i be able to detect any damage to valves from above on the td? What if two cylinders one on compression one on exhaust only h...

Re: How to remove crankshaft pully bolt?

Thanks, I'll get my father to dig out his V5 then we can see whether it's registered as a HDi or Td. Thanks for that. I'm new to 406's and it's a real shame that this has happened, as the car's in brilliant nick and otherwise a reliable workhorse. Hence the desire to try to get it working at some co...
