It should be written on the cable connector or on the ECU connector. At least which is the first pin on every raw of pins. Then just count to find yours :)

Everything is absolutely the same as on petrol engine. Looking from the bottom, if there is a wire, there will be a connector too. Hi I just asked a friend who made it on two 2.1TD. He said that on one of them there was no wire from the ECU but the other one had it terminated somewhere under the steering wheel. So just take a look at the wires coming out of the ECU. If there is something going out from pin 23, then you can sear...

I do not think only the buttons will be enough :) You may need the controller also.
And may be the variable switches from Citroen C5 which are quadratic will fit better from the rectangular one from Xantia... if they are not bigger...
