A further update on my engine problems. At the last service the exhaust down pipe and cat? ( the section passing under the gear lever ) were replaced. This transformed the car, possibly the same effect as knocking the cat out and remapping stuff. The engine does still not have the thrust in the back...

Ta Rog, years of non turbo petrol engines, then change to a turbo diesel, it has loads of new bits, missing bits, dont no wot it is bits. The other car, Seat, has so much engine stuffed into the space, changing the headlight bulbs is almost impossible without first remove....that I have tryed to ign...

sounds daft but have you checked for slack in the Acelerator cable? its a easy 2min job,. Yes, lozz, I 'looked' at the throttle cable, weeks back, it did seem to be a bit slack.... I will sit down with Haynes and figure it out. I've been distracted by faults in linkages, brake calipers, frt wh bear...

Thanks for the welcome, lozz,plod,rwb Yes it is my first 406, our other car is a Seat Cordoba (an Ibiza saloon, made of vw Polo bits) with 6speed, 1.9 Tdi 130bhp, which has VW's easy to stall, big turbo motor.
