Thank you to all the replies. The problem has been cured by the fitment of a new airflow sensor, which I believe is under the airfilter.
Car drives completely differently and has much more pull at low revs. Work done by First Diesel on Thornton Road, Croydon.

Thanks for the two replies-- there are no warning lights and in fact when the car was plugged in via the dashboard plug, it only made a comment about glow plugs. But, it starts very well and it is sluggish when hot as well as cold. It certainly does not pull well from 1400 rpm, only at about 2000rpm...
