Every time I start the car - from cold or hot - there comes a loud chatter from behind the glovebox. It always lasts exactly the same length of time, around 10 secs, then stops. As you said, mostly a case of c b a but armed with advice from here I asked them how they knew the compressor was faulty, had they checked for totally empty..... errr no they hadn't. But fair play to them, when I told them that this car had a no-gas cutout they said to bring it in anyway - they did ...

Just a quick one - if there's no gas at all in the system should the compressor cut in when the a/c button is pressed? Qwikfit told me the compressor should always cut in, gas or no.... 406 HDI

I've only just started sorting this problem so I'm bumping the thread if that's ok! The EGR trick has helped a lot. I can avoid the running on problem if I rev to 2500 or so THEN turn off, letting it die without fuel. But the fuel pressure reg is sixty quid and I can't get a scrapper without the who...
