Re: grinding front brakes
I would jack the car and with the wheel off, spin the hub using a copper pipe over one stud, and get an accomplice to lightly brake, so you can see whats rubbing.

Re: engine problem
this used to be a common fault on lorries, and was caused by the turbo sucking in oil from worn bearings and forcing it into the diesel engine, causing the lorry to rev with no throttle input - and the strangler wouldnt cut the motor off as it was getting "fuel" from the turbine oil supply if the le...

Re: funny rattle...
3200 sounds about right. So is there a problem with the crank pulley breaking up? Or does it spin on the shaft or something? I would have assumed the engine was belt timed and so I guess that the problem must be cracking of the pulley...? Must take a look, could be a noisy injector or a pump noise, ...

Re: gear shift prob
yeah sage advice mate. I just wondered if it was a mechanical adjustment problem rather than a synchro fault. I do notice I can beat the synchro and get a crunch by shifting too quickly into 4th as well, but that may be the box needing the oil replaced. The shifter seems to go too far forward in 1 3...

The box is very baulky going into 3rd. I can shift all the other gears ok, but going into 3rd is a right pig!

funny rattle...
Hi lads, I noticed today that when the turbo goes on boost, 2k to 3k, I hear a kind of rattley noise, not like mechanical / valves etc, but more like running a thin stick along a railing.....or one of those things you put on yer bike spokes in the 70's....lol After the revs pass 3k, the rattle disap...

Re: one for the 406 derv owners
hi mate, i've seen other td's with dump valves on, they are ok to begin with but are generally useless and the noise gets annoying after a while, easily doable though. my a4 20v turbo has a cone filter which lets the factory dv be heard very clearly so a lot of audi lads have gone back to a panel fi...

Re: Hiya!
Thanks lads for the welcome and the info! Superb, I did think the stalk was for the cd player volume, plus the night illumination on the computer is gone....so a wee job there I feel. I also seem to have the old "flappy sill seals" nonsense, I noticed as I jumped out of the car in the dark....and wa...
Hiya!
Hi all, just picked up an '01 406 HDi saloon as a work hack. Not had a pug in a loooooong time, but with fuel costing 1.20 a litre round my way, it was time to ditch the petrol guzzlers and get a diesel. Nice to be here, hopefully I can help with any problems I have experience of and pick your brain...
