Brakes - Master Cylinder

Hello,

My 406 started flashing the brake pad warning light at me the other day: looks like (O) and is orange.
(can i assume that the fluid warning light is the handbrake one? like it was on my 306DTS and my 405GLD and the other 405GLXD)

I splashed out and got discs and pads all round ( not fitted yet ). As i've noticed that if i put my foot on the brake and leave the pressure on it then the pedal will slowly sink to the bottom. This i have been told is the master cylinder. Is this true? I cant see any leaks anywhere.

I've noticed the front of the car dipping more now, asif there is no brakes being applied to the rear. I assume that also points to the M.C not distributing the pressures as it should. I dont want to fit my new brakes before i know that the rest of the system works as it should.

It's a D9 and has ABS and has a heavy footed driver at times.

the reason the pedal sinks is its EBA (electronic brake assist) kicking in, its based on pedal position, vehicle speed and rate of application, if you leave your foot on the brake it gets confused and activates without moving, my old HDi did this, but no matter how hard i drove on the road i could never induce the EBA to kick in

That bluddy Ni$$an did the pedal sinking thing, I always thought it was the seals in the master cylinder but it didn't figure as the brakes were sh!t hot. Not tried it on the '9 yet, I have a feeling something would probably break...

This is my 1st car with EBA, i have had the hazards flash several times so i guess the system is working. I think i'll change the pads and disks then. just the font of the car dipping alot more then usual worried me.

My 1999 D9 has a Bosch servo, no EBA for me then

Mine sinks very quick, i'm fine with that, altho it has times when it sinks sllloooowwwly takes about 3-5 secs to get to the ground. is that a sign of bad things to come?

Sounds a bit too quick to me, what's the fluid level doing?

Levels are fine, dont get me wrong the car stops, just under heavy breaking it seems to have a mind of it's own with varied stopping distances.
