just bought 2001 2.2 hdi exec cuts out

hi bought the car yesterday had a test drive all ok . my missis driving back home down motorway me following behind, the car cuts out and says anti pollution fault, i get in it starts ok but shes scared to drive it so i drive it the next 40 miles no problem drives lovely. coming up the the road where i live doing about 40 car cuts out load of traffic behind anti pollotion message and stop showing on screen, it wouldnt start for about 30 secs then all ok i dont want to chance driving it like this any ideas please.

Hi there Mick. I'd think the first thing to go for would be the fuel tank mounted lift pump, they either die a death or they can fart about for a while as the brushes wear out. You should be able to hear it faintly as it pressurises the system when you first turn the key.

hi steve i cleaned a few connections up today took it for a run ,ok for 20 miles then cut out ,abs and handbrake light on and anti pollution, it started right away and got me home when i switched off it ran on a few seconds i thought it did that yesterday but today i noticed it more, ive just read the post above about running on, would the stop solenoid also cut my engine while driving if faulty?
