the car is still at the garage so i dont know about fault codes.

garage has a new theory, apparently what commonly happens when the lift pump goes is that it breaks down and spews out loads of iron filings before it gives up (lots of wear),m this fills the fuel tank and gets sucked up and goes round the whole system.

Garage has said whats needed is new tank, fuel lines, high pressure pump and injectors. im finding this hard to beleive, has anyone else heard of this theory because it seems a bit far fetched. garage wants 1200 quid to do it, in that case its going to be a scrap car, just hope hes talking rubbish.

sounds like your garage has been talking to a main dealer !!, thats their standard fix and they make quite a bit of money from it too !!, each injector has a filter in it to protect them, so i cant see how it can get round the system and past the fuel filter, the only unfiltered fuel to go round the system comes from the leakoff pipes i believe, and to get to the leakoff pipes, the fuel has to pass through the prefilters

The only issue i could see is if the high pressure pump has had its internal seals damaged by metal particles, but you would need to see the live data whilst you are cranking, i think your garage dont know much about the HDI engine, and are just quoting you to change everything because that saves them diagnosing it properly !

Where abouts in the country are you ?

this is what im thinking, the mechanics arent actually engaging their brains, so frustrating.

gonna try and get the car back on the drive and get a family friend who worked at peugeot for 20 years to check it out as that garage is sounding more useless by the day. Would be quite a feat to get filings past the filters

There's not much I know about diesel 406s, but what I do know is that when the lift pump goes kaput, it can dump bits of metal into the system, which are known to blow up the sensitive high pressure pump...

New pumps from a scrappy would be a good idea, and tbh I'd take the filter housing and pipework between the pumps too. Wouldn't bother with a new fuel tank though... Likewise I don't think the injectors would really be affected, but as I say I don't know much about diesels

Going to try and fix this myself then sell the car on as its sat on the drive dead at the mo. start with the low pressure system, tehn the high pressure system and then the control side, think thats the sensible thing to do

I missed this thread before, I had a lift pump fail on mine - and I mean really fail (as in I kept it going for about 4 days by smacking the tank underneath to get the pump to spring into life) so I would say my pump failed as badly as any of them and I had no bits of metal anywhere! the fuel filter was changed as a precaution.

I suppose some pumps could send a few bits down the line but these should stop at the filter bowl. If this happens then it is recommended to flush-through the fuel lines, fit new filter, run for a bit, fit another filter etc.

When my Lift pump went i only had one chance at it going again, tapped the top of the fuel pump and it came back to life once and that was it, after that i changed the pump for a brand new one from GSF £85 ish IIRC, I checked and changed the fuel filter and apart from the usual crap found in there, all was good.

it was a really easy pump change too, so thats where i would start, and if you can grab a lift pump from the scrappy then even better.

reviving this old thread. it has a new tank lift pump.

its been at another garage for the last 2 months and theyve come back with the same iron filling theory. looks like ill be breaking it for parts, honestly is it worth it, it is the 406 executive estate with climate control and heated, electric leather interior.

Garage want 600 quid to fix the car, obv you would over budget just in case, however it needs 4 new tyres, mot, tax.

Hi CoV sorry to hear of your woes but what engine are we talking about ? Can't find in your thread if this is a HDI or an XUD ?

Sounds like you've been let down by your garages but I can understand that after spending £500 already and not being any better off then breaking it may well recoup the cost plus some more.

How old is the car? old working/tatty HDi's are only worth a few hundred now :(

So frustrating when garages fault-find at your expense by random replacement of parts. Or in this case: don't fault-find.

When to stop pouring money in .... well Auto-trader have estate execs from £750 (284,000) to £3000 (82,000). Ignore money you have already put into the car - it is lost for ever. Current value of your car - about £100 tops, as a non-runner breaker? I suggest that if you could guarantee a repair for £600-1000 it is worth repairing. My problem would be - what is wrong with it? How much will a diagnosis cost? Is it in fact diagnosable? Some faults seem to defy diagnosis despite (or perhaps because of) the complexity of the wiring and control systems.

I would suggest the double relay in the ECU box (see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5524 but that doesn't give stuttering - just cutting out.

Sympathetic regards,

Springnuts.

well i was breaking another car on my driveway, that went on monday so now i can get the 406 home. Simply isnt worth getting it running. even if the engine worked it needs, tax, 4 new tyres, mot, its never sailed through the MOT ha. Its also pushing 190k miles.

So now im looking into what is worth taking off it, what sort of parts is there a demand for as im not keen on t he idea of stripping the car bare and having to store body panels for months and months.

I fIgure things like leather interior, front and rear lights, climate control... control. any other parts people can thing of that there is a demand for. and what parts are worth these days?

thanks, Paul
