Recently my coupe V6 started overheating, I carried out a few checks and found both fans to be faulty so I bought two new fans and fitted them and replaced the antifreeze and bled the system. When I ran the car up the fans work ok and cut in but didn't seem to cut out again, I had been checking how hot the hoses got and they all got hot apart from the bottom one also the rad didn't seem to get hot either. I had the car running for about 40 minutes and it didn't overheat, I'm stumped on this, any ideas? I thought it might be the thermostat not opening but would the top hose get hot and would this explain the cold rad?
cheers, Dave

Re: V6 cooling problem
Having plenty of old XUD's im used to overheating but by the sounds of it you have got it early before head gasket trouble has started. I dont know if the pipes are meant to be hot/cold but just take it to a good independant mechanic to be sure, thats all i can say i dont know much about the v6 (wish i had one).
Re: V6 cooling problem
My V6 Exec has the same engine it doesn't overheat but if the fans come on they stay on for quite a while (usually they only come on in a traffic jam).
What do the coolant and oil temps read my oil temp never goes above 90 deg C and the coolant never goes above 120 deg C.
The V6 Fans are controles from sensor that's in the water housing just under the throttle body. There's a control box under the left hand wheel arch liner behind the fog lamp, bolted to the inner wing. There are also 3 relays in the middle of the fan cowling behind the grille.
To see if the relays and control box work try unplug the sensor, the fans should come on full as a failsafe. If they don't come you may have an issue with the fan box or a duff relay.

Re: V6 cooling problem
I've managed to sort it thanks. I was pretty sure that the cooling system was bled properly so I crossed this off the list, The fact that water came out of the matrix bleeder the instant the engine was started showed that the water pump was working properly. The fans were cutting in so I knew these were ok. I then found out that the thermostat controls the water flow at the bottom rad hose so this explained the hot top hose and cold bottom. I managed to get a thermostat from my friendly local motor factor £20 inc VAT and proceeded to fit it outside in the dark and rain. Refilled the cooling system and bled out the air, took it for a 30 mile test drive and all is A-OK.
