2.1 TD cuts out and/or over revs

Post by DaveWhite »

Hi, new to this forum and hoping someone can point us in the right direction for a problem we have on our 1997 estate with a 2.1TD engine.

Sometimes when changing up the engine overrevs, which I think may be a sticky accelerator cable, but the issue that this seems to cause is the engine then cutouts and the engine management light comes on. We can immediately restart the engine just by turning off the ignition and turning it back on, so it is not a disaster but does affect the way one drives and can make it awkward for overtaking. Sometimes it will cutout even when under load i.e. not changing gear just accelerating.

I have changed the throttle position sensor, admittedly for another second hand one but I think the chances of two being faulty and the car having the same fault must be quite slim. As the car is 13 years old and has covered just over 200K miles, there is no point in going mad on it, but as it otherwise runs quite well and has just been MOT'd for another year, with only the rear lower arm outer bushes needing replacing to get it through, it would be nice to resolve the issue.

I'm sure someone will mention the crank and cam sensors but I would be interested to know the logic behind either of these being the cause of the problem. I also suspect that it is unlikely to be related to the fuel pump, as it seems tied to engine revs and always restarts straight away but here's hoping someone can identify the problem.

Hello Dave, just had a similar problem on my 406 '97' petrol. When I put it in neutral or changing gear the engine just cut out, but I could jurk it to start again when I put it back in gear. Had the car 2 years passed both MOTS without advisories, but problem occured in cold weather. Garage checked the diagnostics nothing found, so took 2 breather pipes off and found they were full of oily deposits from over the years. He took all the breather pipes off the carb and around the engine and found them all the same so cleaned them all and the carb. Now the car is running perfect. getting approx 43-45 mpg.
Hope this helps regards Bob

Hi. I am also new. Joined to be able to post an answer to this one.
When I bought my 406 2,1 TD with 99.000 miles it had a similar problem. Sometimes it rewed quite hysterically by itself. It took a long time to pinpoint the cause, which turned out to be the feedback sensor for the timing position on the pump. My car has now 214.000 miles and is still running fine. Presuming your car is also equipped with the Lucas Epic pump I would suggest you to source a used BUT FULLY FUNCTIONING unit from eBay or the like. They can be found at around 100-150 pounds. They were used by Peugeot, Citroen and Fiat. The pump has six actuaters/transducers all connected to the same plug. While leaving the pump in the car, the complete set of electrical parts can be exchanged with the parts from the "new" pump. Be sure not to add or loose any of the o-rings in the process. This procedure is relatively cheap attempt compared to buying new parts. I hope you will get the problem solved.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I think the feedback sensor sounds more likely, as the engine always overrevs before cutting out, never just dying. I presume that a new sensor from Peugeot is not possible or economically viable. I'll look into that one and if anyone else has come across a similar problem I'd be grateful to hear about it.

Thanks

Peugeot will just want to sell you the whole thing, you're better off going to a specialist.

I found the Peugeot part number (1920 3W) but does anyone know the Lucas part number for the Lucas EPIC pump?

I suggest talking to a very nice man called Ian at Hickleys 01823 328600, well he's been nice to me with EPIC related problems.
406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.
Hmmmm, straight 6 goodness!
