"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

I'm no mechanic, so please bare with me,where is the strainer? Is it easy to get at? Is it a case of replacing it or can it be cleaned?

Lift the back seat cushion, driver's side, you'll see a big grommet in the floor.
Remove grommet, you'll see the top of the fuel pick-up / level sender unit, which is fitted into the top of the fuel tank and held in place by a large plastic nut.
Should be one electrical connector and two fuel pipes attached to the top via quick release couplings - undo these, (catching any spills), then unscrew the nut & withdraw the strainer / level sender assembly.

Thanks for the reply Dogslife!
I will have a look on the week-end,reference the 406 td 1998 estate--would you replace the strainer? or is it a case of removing the sender/assembly and cleaning it?
Would you replace the fuel filter as a matter of course as well?

No need to change the strainer - just clean it.
Unless you know the fuel filter to be fairly new, I would change it anyway.
