The nice man from the rac brought me home last night.
He was kind enough to attach his computer before he went and showed me 3 fault codes: u3f00, p00cc and p0190 fuel rail pressure sensor.

i tried googling the other 2 but could not find them. then i read on here that some people disconnect the pressure sensor as a quick fix. so got up this morning to pop it off so i could use the car for work. Then realised that a previous owner had cut the yellow connector lower down and reconnected one single wire circumventing the connector . i disconnected that just in case, but old diesel did not start.

the old car starts first time with easy start, but if give it welly it will cut out. the rac man said it was a symptom of the sensor not regulating pressure properly. but if people are driving around with the sensor disconnected it should start, shouldn't it?

the car is a 2000 2.0 hdi 90 with bosh fuel system

Do you know if the in-tank fuel pump is working? you can hear it run for 3 or 4 seconds when you put the ignition on. If this pump is not supplying fuel to the Filter housing and HP pump the you'll get the low rail pressure fault. Try not to crank the engine too much as any lack of lubricating diesel is not good for the pump.

It do sound like the previous owner has had issues with the pressure sensor before. I'm not sure what disconnecting it would do, I'd have thought the ECU would detect it as a serious fault and stop the engine running to prevent damage.

hi yes fuel is definitely coming through the filter I watched the RAC man check.and if easy start is squirted in it starts first time.

i only got the idea about disconnecting the sensor from a previous post. but easy start spray will start it even with the fault showing.

It is possible to run in limp home mode with the pressure sensor disconnected - instead of measuring say 200 Bar @ tickover, up to 1350 Bar at full chat, the ecu will use a default value of 340 Bar, (or something thereabouts), if it doesn't get any signal. Seen this suggested as a way of 'testing' a fualty sensor.

Obvious solution is to hook it up to a PP2000 and observe the fuel rail pressure properly.

should the car start with turning the key (with a disconnected sensor)?

also can anyone recommend a cheap car scanner to aid me? I'm experiencing financial liquidity irregularities at the mo and until the chancellor agrees my bail out package the pp2000 may be a little out of my price range.

The first one seems to be something to do with the gearbox They could just be spurious - clear them and see if they return.

hi an update!

I've changed the the fuel rail pressure sensor and it has helped the running. but the car still will not start without easy start.

the engine light for the the most part is off

with the occasional stall and bing up come the light! wait 5 mins its off again!

the fault codes don't change

Any at all ideas appreciated
