The high voltages sounds like the reason for the faults. The regulator is more than likely stuffed. Try, http://www.findapart.co.uk for a cheap secondhand replacement alternator. I just got one for my missus, denzil cavalier for 25 quid from there.

Have just had a word with Gaz, and he says it's the alternator, you've got an unstabilized voltage fault and you need a load test doing on the alternator cos he reckons it's banging out too many volts. He says I should have remembered this as the lemon I used to drive did this and it boiled up a perfectly good battery.
