Welly's got the volvo with the same engine - an S50 T5, I think?
He says he gets about 25 mpg IIRC
I've heard you only need to fill the ST up once anyway, cos it'll be stolen before it runs out.

2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Better to get a car with a nice big N/A engine. I loved my old tubby, but my V6 wipes the floor with it in terms of performance AND fuel economy
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I get high 20's to low 30's on a motorway run at 70ish with my 40 year old 3 Litre Essex V6.
The MPG is helped with the aid of an overdrive gearbox, which were in common use until the 1970's.
Perhaps a step back is the way forward.

The 2.2 litre EW12 J4 engine (as fitted to the D9 SRi and a small number of D9 Coupes) was what PSA decided was the best replacement for the 2.0 Turbo you've got in your D8 SRi. The engine is very fuel-efficient for a petrol engine, fairly powerful for an NA engine, and feels/sounds very sporty for a four-cylinder engine.
If you don't want a diesel engine, keep an eye out for a D9 SRi in good condition. They'll be more comfortable as a long-distance cruiser than a Focus ST, and far less likely to be pinched by some little sod. And will probably cost you less to buy (and maybe to insure, though the 406 seems to be very strangely placed in the insurance groups).
