I have a 1996 1.9 diesel.
I am getting a fair bit of black smoke and a little difficulty in starting on cold mornings.
I have changed glow plugs 3 and 4 which has helped.
Is there a method/special tool to get 1 and 2 out with out taking off the fuel pump/injector pipes?
The 1/2 drive sockets just can't get in. the 3/8 can't do it either.
I haven't taken off a fuel pump/inlector before and would like to avoid it if possible.
Regards,
Colin.

Re: Remove Glow Plug
I usually take off the rubber water pipe to help get a long 12mm spanner on the glow plugs behind the pump.
Some guys take off the injector pipe to get more room, I've never had to do that but it might help.

Re: Remove Glow Plug
Thanks for the response.
I can just about get to No. 3 with an open ended spanner but really difficult and decided not to try it. I needed a magne to rescue the small nut on the supply wire as I kept dropping it.
I had a good look at no.4 and can't see it being done without removing the injector/pump assembly.
I think I might leave that for the Easter weekend or the royal Wedding!

Colin.

Re: Remove Glow Plug
Just pull of the 2 injector lines, job takes about 5 minutes after that.

Re: Remove Glow Plug
I had a 1.9TD Xantia, but never removed the pump.I have a selection of cheap spanners that i bent about in order to get to the plug behind the inj pump.I would get a few turns with one bent spanner ,then use a differently shaped bent spanner,& so on.The biggest danger is if the glowplug snaps,as most people would only change the easy plugs, meaning the plug behind the pump could have been in there for years
.After a while i could change no 3 & no 4 plug in 10 mins.Where abouts in the country are you Colin??

Re: Remove Glow Plug
My bro had this problem on a 405, which supposedly had 'all new glow plugs', turned out some plonker only changed the two easy ones and fitted something unreliable to them, so he had none working.
Our experience suggests only ever fit Bosch or NGK.

Thank you all for your replies.
StevieboyTD; I like your confidence. Why is life never that simple for me.
Hammerman; You sound like my type of DIYer. Bent spanners, I like it.
Lozz; I might just splash out on this, looks if they could be usefull.
The car is needing some TLC. It looks like a wheel bearing is going, the aerial needs replaced, the timing belt is due for a changeout and an oil change is due. I will do it all myself, probably, I just want to confirm any special tricks or tools before I started. All the rest I have done before on a Citreon, same engine. The wife is going away for a long weekend soon, so it looks I will have enough to keep me out of trouble.

colin.
