It probably holds up one of the selector rods.

In the old days, VW put a bolt on the front of the gearbox casing which looked like the filler plug....it was actually the bolt holding the selector rods in position.....you had to remove the gearbox and strip to repair them.

VW later changed the filler to a large hexagon nut and replaced the selector holding bolt with a large phillips screw.
Thats still hapening jasper,
iknow someone who took a bolt out of the box on a vdub sharran and the gearbox was no good afterwards, that was an Auto tho,

Evening all, job completed successfully, thank you.

Went roughly like this:

Loosen big jubilee clip on airbox exit, lift airbox away giving more room to play with.

Remove drain plug, leave to drain for 10 mins or so until it's stopped.

Remove plastic breather plug (17mm A/F).

Pour a little 20/50 in, watch it pour out of drain hole, yep it's the right hole!

Refit drain plug tightly, add 1.85 ltrs of the correct oil. The breather hole faces the wrong way so you need a flexi spout to bend it round into the hole. I lost a little oil getting the two 1 ltr oil bottles in place, so 2x 1 ltr bottles is about right.

Replace plug, clean up mess, replace airbox, job done.

See the attached pic, makes it all clear!

The reversing light switch hole is better for access, but I couldn't get the plug off the switch so went for the breather, easier for me but messier.

Thanks to all for the advice, my selector rods survive intact
