Hi
I'm going to change the fuel filter this weekend and do an oil/filter change before the mot. Whats the best way to get the lid off the filter housing? My one is the bosch filter housing and has the hexagon plastic bit on top so i was thinking of using a 22mm hex socket or a filter strap around the edge? I'll clean the housing and pipes up with some brake cleaner beforehand as well. Any advice appreciated.

Use the socket with an extension bar and a ratchet.
Turn it 90 degrees anti clockwise then lift the lid, taking care with the position of the metal ring and the seal.
The filter has a hole at the top and a funny shaped base with a rubber seal, just take care you get it right way up.
Clean the inside with brake cleaner as well.
After you have fitted the seal, metal ring, and the filter housing lid, turn on the ignition and check for leaks, turn the ignition on and off a few times to pump fuel through to bleed it automatically.
Re: fuel filter change
Make sure the parts place dont give you the wrong filter,
they gave me the wrong one,
ihad to put the old filter back in, and then go back,
ithink yours will have the big filter,
id check on Service box which one you need to save a double trip,
also some have a Metal seal, the filter dosent come with that so if yours is metal dont throw it away you will need it

Hi
Thanks for the advice the filter i've got here looks exactly the same as the last one i had fitted at the garage i always tell them its a bosch pump and that always helps narrow it down. I always buy the parts myself and get them to fit it they don't like it but it saves me a bit of money and they don't get the chance to ramp up the price on the parts they supply. I believe this is quite common for garages to add on a bit extra for parts they supply. Its a bit of a con really as they charge £57 plus the vat for the labour. Thats why im doing it myself this time cut out the middle man.
Bought all my parts today airfilter/fuel filter/oil filter came to £17.76 and the engine oil is Texaco's halvoline 10w40 @ £23.99 adds upto just over £41. The hdi engine seems to like it and i just stick to the same oil in all the time not had any problems with it.
I tried some Fuchs 10w40 a while back and the engine sounded like a bag of nails, i just went back to the texaco stuff again.....

Hi
Thanks Jasper and lozz i got this sorted this afternoon. I see what you mean about getting the lid off its easy does it with the socket and ratchet very slowly. I drained most of the fuel out before starting. Last year the lift pump went on this 406 and i said to the garage about replacing the fuel filter and they said it would be okay. When i opened the filter housing i could see a few metallic looking specks in the bottom so i'm hoping that these are just leftovers of the lift pump. The garage are lazy B******s you would think after something like a lift pump going they would replace the filter or at least explain why? Cleaned it all out really thoroughly with brake cleaner. I see what you mean about the piece of metal lozz i put the new rubber gasket in the right place then put the filter in and then the metal bit then popped the lid back on the housing and then turned it. so far so good no leaks and the 406 seems to be running well. I'm ready for the mot tommorow. I'll let you know if it passes. I put some reddex through it the other day and tonight i put a bit of bp ultimate diesel in as it seems to do the trick.
Fingers crossed......

Re: fuel filter change
Hi
The fuel filter wasn't as bad as i thought and there was the fear factor of something breaking. car went in for mot today failed on split o/s/f cv boot Strangly this was only replaced about a month ago so i will be checking that tonight and re-ordering a stretch cv boot the quality of the one i fitted wasn't too bad but it makes you wonder if its split after 1 month. The other thing is the handbrake is not good enough on the sheet it says 13% and it has to be 16% so i'll have a go at adjusting it up using jaspers guide. So all in all its not too bad and i've got 10days to sort it and i'm off work sat, sun & monday.
The back box on the exhaust passed ok has half a ton of repair bandage and gun gum on it. lol. good job....
