NEW CAMBELT

Post by marco2002 »

Hi
Just had a new cambelt, tensioners, waterpump and coolantfitted yesterday.£190.00 cash job so quite happy with the price I supplied the parts which only cost £100. Car is pulling a lot better now and sounds a bit quieter. I was shocked the mechanic reckons the crankshsaft pulley will need doing again! It was only replaced a year ago done 20k on it so far. I think i'll spend a bit more money on the next one they don't seem to be made to last and i'd have thought they should last a bit longer than 1year/ 20k mileage. Has anyone else had this problem i bought the pulley from from GSF and their parts usually last a bit longer. You can clearly see the pulley moving as it spins.

This is one part, I felt I would definately go to the stealer for, as didn't want to be doing the job again - ended up paying around £86 IIRC

When i bought the bottom pulley at GSF i wanted the dearer one which is about £70 but they didn't have one they only had their own brand vetech which is about 45 quid. I think i'll go for the dearer one the last one i had lasted about 60,000 miles needless to say i was a bit surprised that this has only lasted 20,000. I was speaking to someone in the trade today and he said a lot of gsf's products are made in India which is not great and he would only use them as a last resort. I was thinking about speaking to GSF and seeing if i could get a discount off another bottom pulley in view of this. Its worth a try anyway.

Hi
I will have to fit a new bottom pulley next. Had a look at the how to in the knowledge base and it doesn't look too bad a job. While i was having a look on the web i came across another how to which is also very good. It might be useful for a few people who need to replace the bottom pulley link is as follows: http://shockwaves-control.co.uk/ebay/en ... %20007.pdf

Good link that. Just replaced my cambelt / aux drive belt / idlers etc & would like to add two snippets:

1) Borrow a 2nd 1/2" long extension so you can turn the crank bolt from outside the wheelarch - makes it much easier.

2) I can't exert enough force with one hand to slacken the aux belt tensioner, so had to lever my 15mm combo spanner with another spanner, which feels likely to slip as you fumble the locking pin in to hold the tensioner off. Next time, I'm gonna arm myself with a purpose made extension bar for this job.

Personally, I would replace the pulley with a solid one, I need one on my van soon and I will be fitting a solid one.

In the link it shows taking off bits under the bonnet....I wouldn't bother....just take off the wheel arch liner to get at the drive belt and pulley.

Don't forget my way of undoing the pulley bolt if you get stuck.

After what Dogslife was saying about the tensioner on the aux belt is it that hard to release it and re-tension? I reckon there must be a few other people who bought GSF's own brand crank pulley and are probably havin the same problem. Must be bad quality control in the factory where they are made. I wouldn't usually moan but if anyones thinking about buying one of these don't buy it get a dearer one if you can afford it

hi Jasper

Thats interesting so you can replace the normal crankshaft pulley on the 110 hdi (made of rubber and metal) with a solid one? Does it cause any problems as i thought the normal one had a purpose and was a neccessary evil like it absorbs vibrations, heat and all the torque/force in the crankshaft ?

Thanks

hi Jasper
Just been having a look on ebay Is this the crankshaft pulley you are talking about its a solid one made of steel. heres the link: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PEUGEOT-2-0-HDI-C ... _500wt_922

I think it would solve the problem that these things cause as i've found out .Let me know what you think i'll have to get one ordered this week.
Thanks

Hi marco, yes that's the solid one by the looks of it, I'm not sure of the make of that one on ebay, It's about the same price I would be paying.

I honestly don't know what effect the solid one has on the engine, I haven't got round to fitting a new pulley on my Expert van just yet...that's a 110 engine as well.

The technical guy from the company that supplies these pulleys was in my local suppliers one day and I had a chat about them, he advised me to put the solid on.

I don't want you to have any problems with your engine so you'll just have to try it and see how it goes or fit the original spec one.

Sorry, I would have liked to have tried mine out first to be able to give more info on the subject.

Hi Jasper
I'll have a bit more of a look into this. My only concern would be the noise as the rubber must absorb a lot vibration and heat just wondering if a solid metal one would be noisier but it should last the life of the car ? I'll have a bit more of a look around and see what i can get and maybe speak to peugeot and see what they think about going for a solid one?

The local motor factors gave me a quote £99 for a gates pulley (top quality) . Budget one made by conteco for £54. Have you heard of conteco i've never heard of them and don't know what the quality is like. The one on the car from GSF will be going back for a refund.

Go for the solid one. replaced mine (110hdi ) when I did the belts. No problems, no extras noise and I used Jaspers bolt removal technique. I have now done three pulleys on different cars and always replaced them with the solid one. It can't fall apart! It was around £40 from my local factors (Nyanza from Coventry).

Thanks for the advice i'll get the solid crankshaft pulley you have convinced me now and the price is good. Just fed up with the other type i've replaced one at 110k then this one at 177k and now its starting to go at 197k so like you say its worth getting it just so you don't have the hassle of doing it again.
