Hi
Just finished the car a couple of hours ago. The weather was lousy today but it didn't matter anyway as i rigged up a big tarpaulin over the car and stayed dry. When you put a new bearing on the driveshaft it has to go as far as it will go along the abutment. For some strange reason the new metal bush i got from peugeot didn't fit i spent a fair time trying to get it to on. I compared it with the old one and it looked a bit smaller in diameter not much but enough to make it difficult. I fitted the old one back and its fine managed to tap the bearing and bush onto the driveshaft with a small drift i had. I made sure that the carrier that the bearing sits in had some grease around it. When the old bearing came off there was no sign of any grease and thats probably why it seized. Also repacked the pot joint with some new grease and put new metal clips on. The gaitor looked okay as well. I thought i might as well do it while i'm there pretty pointless doing all this work if the driveshaft has to come out again. The most fiddly bit was getting the 11mm bolts out that hold the bearing in. I took the big turbo pipe off that runs underneath and it gave me a bit more clearance could have done with a set of those ratchet spanners that turn at an angle . Cleaned up all the gunk and crap thats built up on the turbo pipe. next job is the crankshaft pulley. No more car mechanics for a while. I'm going to drive it in the morning looking forward to it after driving that Audi A3 for a week now. Its rubbish has a problem with starting. On idle its a bit lumpy and theres a sqeaking noise coming from the front.

Just an update drove the 406 to work today it feels a lot smoother now and the clunking noise when you start it up or switch the engine off has gone. Theres a bit of vibration on the o/s but thats the crank pulley which is getting done soon. I've decided to go the whole hog and do the top engine mounts and gearbox mount then at least i know they are all okay. I've never replace either of them before. I think they will be a bit more straight forward than the lower mount.
