406 110 hdi engine chirp dmf?

Post by selectcase »

HI all

I bought a 2001 406 hdi 110 estate with 115k on it back in jan and so far have been pleased with it - i had to replace the middle and back exhaust box but i got a good deal on that at £125 if i fitted it myself on the driveway so alls ok there and the handbrake is rubbish but i can deal with that over time - however whenever i start or stop the car there is a chirp/squeak from the engine for about 2 seconds i also get this at low revs around 1000rpm when acclerating/decellerating and changing gear at low revs

i get no clutch slip problems in fact i had five people in the car a couple of days ago going up steep hils and no issues at all so i am suspecting i have a worn dmf - there is a bit of vibration at about 1500 rpm sometimes but barly noticable to be honest.

the thing is do i go the to trouble of getting a solid flywheel kit and fit it or can i leave it for a while and if i do leave it when do i know its time for it to be changed if you see what i mean?

also how hard is it to do the clucth on these? i have done a clutch on a landrover discovery(awful job) and a 306 cambelt and injection pump conversion plus some engine rebuilds - i was wandering if its one of those pain in the A** type jobs with limited access or if its fairly straight forward and i could do in in the driveway in a day type of thing? i have pleanty of tools and an engine crane

thanks

It might not be the DMF - your car probably has a dual mass crank pulley too & these are more prone to premature failure than the DMF. Tell tale signs are rust / dust / metal shavings in the immediate area of the pulley, which you can sometimes spot from under the bonnet.

If in doubt, remove the wheelarch liner and check for any signs of debris or relative movement between the inner and outer metal parts, particularly when starting or stopping the engine.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)
