V6 performance chip

Post by Pugthrasher »

Greetings,
just acquired a year 2000 406 V6 , are there any recommended aftermarket performance chips available? I also would like to know if any other members have had problems with the steering wheel rim 'peeling' our weapons grade sun in New Zealand has attacked it and its peeling off, any solutions on effecting a repair.
206,000km full service history, 2 owner the first a doctor, the second an accountant, for $2,900 I am impressed, it drives very well.

Don't get crap chips. They may boost power but will damage the engine with time.
If you want some more power via software you have to remap the engine.
Most common mods on the V6 are a direct induction airflow (subscribe to the UK coupé forum and search for nivek, he makes those for the coupé, but may be able to fit something on the saloon/estate) and cat removal, both seem to boost power and responsiveness a lot. I'll leave to the most acknowledged guys on this forum since I'm not a V6 expert at all.

So-called performance chips do absolutely nothing good for normally aspirated cars.

Rather than wasting you money on snake oil, you'd be better off giving the car a proper service. Along with the usual stuff like filter replacement, check all the wheels run smoothly (no brake rubbing), check the air intake pipework below the filter and in the wheelarch isn't knackered (which it will be, utterly destroying performance), clean the ICV (if an ES9J4), clean all the air pipework, clean the intake manifold while you're replacing the spark plugs, and replace all the engine management sensors. Replace the catalytic converter(s) too unless it's new.

Doing all that will almost certainly net you even more power than any of these chips even claim to give, and most of it is free or as good as
