Crankshaft pulley & oil seal

1.9 Executive 1996, 240,000 on the clock.

The garage tells me the crankshaft pulley is collapsing and the oil seal is giving up.

I have had the pulley off last year to replace the timing belt (yes, I should have done the pulley at the same itme, I know that now!) but I have not done the oil seal before.
Haynes advises drilling and using self tappers to remove the old one.
Any one got any tips?

just change the pulley. the oil seal will only be leaking a mm if that every week. its normal for these to leak .

also. no you shouldnt have changed the bottom pulley on a timing belt change because on the 1.9 there not usually an issue ..

i had my timing belt changed few weeks ago and the bottom pulley is perfectly fine so i didnt change it ...

if you change the oil seal i think its a timing belt off job. which means BIG JOB for such a little thing.

Thanks for the encouragement.
The garage I deal with are generally good but always a bit relutcant to do anything with the engine because it is so old. I only have a garage base, so to do it myself at this time of year...well I am not looking forward to it.

I have ordered the parts and hope to have a proper look at it on Saturday morning, weather permitting. Meanwhile I am on the bus.

Began this job yesterday, got off to a poor start. My little hydraulic jack got tempermental on me and I lost an hour playing around with it before using a old screw jack. Then I found one of my axle stands had been driven over by a delivery man (new bed).
However, eventually got the crankshaft pulley off, see photo. a bit of a mess.

(Got a good 'photo but can't seem to be able to up upload. The pulley fractured badly at the rear, looks like it started at the keyway.)

So I thought I would take the crankshaft sproket off, to check the oil seal, but it is on solid. So decided to leave it and thought I could just pull the timing belt back on. You can't. So wasted a couple of hours trying short cuts which didn't work. So then started doing the job properly, all timing covers off, top mount, starter motor, etc so I can take the tension out of the system and refit the belt and line everthing up correctly. That took me to this morning and it started to rain, so the whole thing can wait to next Saturday.

Has anyone experienced trouble getting the cranksproket off?
I don't know what to make off it. According to Haynes it should just slide off.
