Replacement engine

Post by Pccosgrove »

i'd really appreciate advice on replacing an engine and gearbox. I have an immaculate 406 2.0 110 2004 hdi facelift estate with an average engine and gearbox, and also a tatty 2001 earlier facelift 110 with an extremely good engine and gearbox. I'm thinking of taking the engine and maybe the gearbox from the older car and putting them into the newer car. The reason I'm wondering if this is possible is that reverse on the cars are in different places so fittings might be different. If it is possible, as well as clutch and cambelt, what else might be worth renewing at the same time? Many thanks anyone.

Doesn't pull that well and gearbox sloppy. Older engine pulls well, gearbox very precise.

I know that the engine in my 52 plate hdi had an "air doser" on the air pipe whatever that is and my 53 plate hdi hasn't and also my 53 has only 2 vacuum valves on the bulkhead and the 52 had 3 so there are differences between cars

The 3rd vacuum solenoid is for the air doser, the reason reverse is in different places on the gearboxes is probably because they're slightly different gearboxes - ML5T & ML5C.

I suppose if you just change the engines over you'd probably be safest keeping the wiring and management from the later car, adding the doser etc as and when. Later HDis have an ecu with 3 connectors on (as opposed to 1) so the engine looms might not be compatible - compare the two. The clutch slave & driveshafts should be the same but you'll probably have to change the gear shift controls over to match the earlier 'box.

Yes my old car was a Rapier,it only went next door when i sold it so i can pop round and make comparisons and that is how i found it had 3 vacuum valves and an air doser, still can't figure out why mine hasn't got a doser though.
