cambelt tension ? i thought cambelts were on a spring loaded tensioner keeping it under tension all the time for when belt stretches a little ?

its on a spring on my XUD anyway i saw jasper put it back in and then release it so spring puts belt under constant tension :? :? :?

Theres 2 types of Tensioner on the D9s,

Dependant on year, some have Dynamic tensioner (Auto)
Manual tensioners, as stated above, if No ~seem~ tool Available, Old skool Method, the Finger & phumb way,

(It wouid help, if Op wouid add, More info to what year of car he has, )

The best way to tension the HDi belt (locking tools removed) is to put a 16mm spanner on the cam pulley and gently tap it to the left until the belt is tight on the injection pump side, then push the tensioner against the belt until you can just turn the tensioner pulley with your hand.

Turn the engine 2 turns and check it again.

If you can't move the pulley it's too tight, if the pulley turns easily, it's too slack.

The D8 1.9TD belt tension is automatic as it is spring loaded.

Thanks guys,

Thanks Jasper, I'll give that a try

I'm guessing by finger and thumb you mean by being able to turn the belt through 90 degrees?

It's a 2001 HDi 110, 2.0 estate

Cheers,

For all it'd cost to get a mechanic to do it, is it worth the hassle of doing it yourself.

With very good how-to information anyone with a bit of confidence could have a go at this job....here is the one listed in the KB for replacing the HDi timing belt and related components....
