hdi fuel filter
So how do you get at it? The Golf had a cap that came off with no problem, but the hdi90's doesn't look like it should - nowhere to grip. Do I need to put a spanner on the hexagonal bit at the top?

Yes, carefully I gave up trying to undo the one on my HDi 90 after some gorilla tightened it up.

2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Jebus
That was bloody difficult for such a simple job. Handy hints:
1. Take the quick-release connections off the top first
2. Use a 22mm socket - six sided - AND turn the fuel connections at the same time to distribute the pressure
3. The O-ring is at the top of the housing. Hard to spot.
4. Keep the bumpy ring
5. Give yourself plenty of time. It's an arse to get the lid back on

The housing is 10% the cost of the car when bought from a factor!Welly wrote:Buy a new housing AND filter - that's my top tip

Re: hdi fuel filter
I thought they were £15.00? plus the filter cartridge.
So many people snap them it could leave you stranded unable to go fetch another one

Re: hdi fuel filter
Whatever you do,DONT apply pressure on the 2top tubes!!!
They snap REALLY REALLY easy. Ive done it twice now. Especially when theyre warm.
Best way :- WD40 (lots!), and 22mm socket as the guy above says.

Re: hdi fuel filter
The lid on mine was threatening to round itself off unless I put pressure on the hose connections... Guess it's just a lose-lose situation on these things then

Re: hdi fuel filter
One of my pipes came off when doing the filter, but upon closer inspection it appears someone had glued it back on before
As it was a few weeks before my holiday down to Cornwall I played safe and bought a new housing
I think i've still got the old one with repaired pipe and brand new fuel filter in shed

Needless to say the engine cover has just gone back on.

Re: hdi fuel filter
I got the left pipe off pretty easy but the right one looks a bit more awkward and i dont fancy being car less over the bank hol weekend, once we get back wether permitting i'll change it plus oil and oil filter... i popped a new air filter in today and the car seem to run better... Think i'm going round the twist cos surely a new air filter cant make it that much better? unless it wasn't changed at the last service when it says it was?lozz wrote:upto now ive never had aproblem changing the filters on hdis,

Re: hdi fuel filter
No trem where you got PUSH thats where the pipes come down from, think it's the same other than that.
The 407 looks a more sturdy setup to me.
