I think it might be possible for HP fuel to get back to the filter housing. In cold weather there's a weird thermostatic chamber that pre-heats the fuel somehow via the thermostat housing and I'm thinking HP fuel can 'come back' to the filter before going to the injectors.

The injectors have an inlet screen but it won't stop everything.

Best to get the live fuel pressure read on idle. On the 110 you need a steady 298Bar at idle, the 90 should be the same? but fluctuating idle pressure is a sign of an unhappy HP pump. To be fair you could probably get another engine if you needed to and rob all the bits you need off that (rather than getting a HP pump and new injectors etc).

Have you every ran petrol by mistake? this is the most common reason for the pump to fail.

I'll have a look at whether it's a Bosch or Siemens tonight- the mechanic was wittering on about Siemens and he also said he'd primed the fuel which recoated the HP filter in swarf so sounding like that one.

I've never put diesel in no, but I've had the car for less than 2k miles so I can't guarantee it's not been done in the past.

My mechanic was just texting me about changing the pump (he didn't say which) as the injectors are still good- it literally was running perfectly then ping error code popped up.

Thanks for all your help on this so far guys.

Unfortunately some cars get Petrol through them, the owner gets 'the fear' and moves it on quick.

This is not to say you've bought a wrong 'un - it happens and there's not much you can do :|

A HP pump used to cost nearly £1,000.00 to replace but things have changed now and it's not the big deal it used to be.

It sounds to me like just the in-tank LP pump and this isn't half the job so fingers crossed!

Let us know how you get on and good luck,

Welly

Right enough-if he's primed it & its got swarf again, its probably the lift pump.I'd be hoping it was that rather than paying £200 for a reconditioned inj pump eh

I've had her stripped down today to check the lift pump and there isn't one- it's a single pump system! Damn!

Gonna have to fork out a few hundred for the new inj pump and hope that clears it up. If not probably a new engine.

Problem is it's nothing but scrap sitting there as it is so the money's got to be spent!

if its a primable pump,it'll be a siemens job. It cost me £350 to have a reconditioned-pump supplied/fitted. The danger with buyin pumps from scrappys is some of them will be knackered with sitting so long etc. All depends how much the cars worth i suppose & what it needs
