Intermittent clutch problems
Ive just bought a 2000 406 Hdi 90 off a guy on ebay. Since getting home last night i noticed i was having problems getting it into gear. When i got home and tried to reverse onto my drive it wouldnt go into gear at all. Eventually it did. I went out about an hour later to check the clutch fluid and it is full. I then tried to put it into gear and move it and it works fine. Is this a problem with all Hdis, this is the first one ive ever bought. The car has covered 136000 miles and there is no service history(i only paid £640!) so i will be getting the cambelt done soon. Can anyone recommend what else i should do to the car as there is no record of any service.

Re: Intermittent clutch problems
Sounds like there may be a lack of gearbox oil.
Re: Intermittent clutch problems
Thats something i did think of(honest!), i think a cambelt change and a service is what she needs.

Re: Intermittent clutch problems
I occasionally have problems getting it into lower gears (1st and reverse) when cold. Always done it and had the same issue on the D8 previous to my D9.

Re: Intermittent clutch problems
Ive just been out in the car now and it seems ok, the one thing i did notice is that the clutch pedal was stuck halfway so i put my foot under it and pulled it back up. Car seems a lot better now. Does this happen a lot?
Re: Intermittent clutch problems
Mines also had the clutch problem sticking half way but never got to the bottom of it even after a new clutch.JIMBOB326 wrote:Ive just been out in the car now and it seems ok, the one thing i did notice is that the clutch pedal was stuck halfway so i put my foot under it and pulled it back up. Mines was 2000 2.0 110 hdi.
You won't even realise your pulling it up after a while.

Yep, same here. Been like that for three years... I replaced the slave cylinder and it didn't make a difference. Bought a master cylinder two years ago but never got around to fitting it - still lying there packed! If it kinda works, don't fix it.

If I remember right the guy I got car off had just changed the master ans slave cylinder and still never made a differenceto clutch sticking halfway.
But your right racoon it only ever seemed to happen in heavy traffic when using the clutch a lot.

Re: Intermittent clutch problems
I had two mechanics look at it and they said there is some spring by the pedal that tends to go weak. I never did look into replacing it though.

Re: Intermittent clutch problems
You get used to it after about a week as captain jack will agree with.
But its a pain in the arse when you get in another car and you still try pulling clutch up lol
