Turbo advice

Hi , My 2ltr hdi 406 feels like the turbo not working? Drives like normally aspirated engine. Drives ok on flat,but sluggish on gradients etc. No "kick/boost" . Are there any checks I can make?

90 or 110?

My 90 never has a kick, it just pulls with the same amount of power from nothing to 4000rpm.

Just put in "poor diesel performance" in search engine..directed me to Rover site. Someone with similar problem to mine was told MAF sensor was to blame? Anyone experienced this problem?

Get it on asteep hill to test,
wind window down and listen for the whistle,

if the turbo was down,it wouid be a total slug,

If your turbo's working, you should be able to feel the increased pressure in the rubber pipe leading to the inlet manifold when you blip the throttle.

There are many possible causes for poor boost performance. Try looking/listening for leaks in the pipework first. Failing that, it's probably best getting it diagnosed rather than working your way through all the sensors and actuators in the hope of getting lucky.

If you add your location, someone nearby may offer to help.......

Before my 110, i went to buy a 2.2 executive and she had no 'kick' at all.
In 2nd gear I floored it but there was nothing at all. Engine sound changed like it was under stress.
According to my friend who was with me its turbo was dead.
Tbh, im still confused, i couldnt judge if it was the dead turbo or just a way car that accelerates.
I dont know if i missed the opportunity to buy a really cheap car in a very good condition or was lucky to not have bought that.
110 GTX. I only bought it cause GTX sounds cool. Should've bought a clean LS. :/

110 is pretty quick too once you wind them up the right way, or totaly un Muzzle one with a remap 8)

This is my first diesel car. I have absolutely no idea how they behave.
When testing 2.2, I had no reference point except for my friend's crappy old diesel vectra in which you can actually feel the turbo kick. Im still not sure if it was normal for that 406 to be like that way. Maybe I should've had taken a longer test drive.
Anyways....a remap and lowered suspension is in the pipeline for my gtx.

PS: Sorry for going off topic. :P

well youve done the right thing there then, the 2.2 shouid feel like a lambo compared to a vectra. 8)

good luck with your motor, im sure you will be happy with its bhp once you get it re-mapped, its worth every penny 8)

There is virtually no kick on the 90 & it's only really noticable on the 110 in 2nd or 3rd. It's stil quite subtle though.

But yeah-diagnostics is the quickest surest way to go. What's been said about hoses as well. IME if the turbo has properly failed it's seized & the engine won't run at all properly if at all.

Had one of those for about 100k miles. Now in that you will notice a bit of a kick, but as it came from the factory the 2.2 was woeful. Stuffed with issues mostly around the anti-pollution system & I always wondered quite where the extra 26 horses had gone. Ran totally out of puff at about 2.5-3k revs too IIRC. Economy is tosh as well-only just above 40mpg. However as I said elsewhere on here earlier this morning I bought a cheap Van Aaken box from ebay & THAT was the making of it so far as power was concerned. It also had the added advantage of not allowing the engine to go into limp mode which it was so fond of doing with the AP system (sounds like what threepot experienced!). But the real fun is a fully defapped & sorted 2.2 with a remap. The coupe boys reckon they're running close to 200BHP with cat gone as well & it's pretty neck to neck stacked up against the libertated 3.0V6s (airbox mod). I had the 180 on mine last year (still fapped though-which was a colossal mistake) & on the way back with a just cleaned FAP on the mway I floored it with a BMW320D behind me & he just vanished into the distance on the rear view. I know it was a 320D as I let him overtake me shortly after.

Mind you a remapped & inlet paddle modded/head gasket 330D is an entirely different kettle of fish. The new forthcoming BMW diesel units look awesome.

Back OT. The turbos on these are wee Gt15s (I think) & are as standard pretty unstressed. With the exception of the 2.2 it's pretty rare to kill one, although leaks & or MAF issues can render it inert. A good italian tune up on branded fuel, fresh air filter (you seen the routing the inlet pipe takes-it's insane & that needs dealing with) & a good dose of Millers Diesel whatever it's called this month can make a discernable difference. I bought a 110 last week & have done exactly that. It's def a bit more perkier & smoother after that. I reckon it's been sat on the mway at about 65 for the last 40k miles or so!
the above will relate to a 2001 2.2HDI 136BHP GTX. VIN: VF38EHXF..Estate. In red. Yes it's FAP & Eolsys too. Deep joy. Now dead.

2.0HDI 110 2001 Estate these days.
