The wifey person was just out in the car, got less than a mile from home and while going through the gears the revs shot up but it was like it was in neautral when i think she was in third gear.
She pulled over switched the engine off and it's been fine since... Dodgy fast pedal cable maybe? or is this another Peugeot gremlin?

Possibly a clutch slip.
First thing I would check is the oil level, I've had these engines over-revving when the oil level has been too high.
She says she was nowhere near the clutch and the only thing she could do was pull over..."it was like it was in neautral".... Yeah love it goes into neautral when you dip the clutch
I'll give it a drive tomorrow and check the oil... What oil btw?

406 runaways are actually quite common. if it was a run-away though it would have 'drove' not just revved as if the clutch was pressed in. really weird
I checked the oil and it was quite low, how can that cause it to over rev though?
I'm now a litre of oil short for my oil change.

Sounds like some oil got past the turbo seals to me. Very strange.

ive not heard of a turbo runaway on the 406s,
but if it does, handbrake on /foot on brake pedal, and stall the engine,
happened to my 2.2HDI last month. Fortunately I caught it very quickly but AA & my mechanic with diagnostics say that the turbo oil seals are shot & that strongly implies the turbo is also compromised. Yes it was a bit full of oil, blasted anti-pollution was persistently on, it was making a hissy sucking noise just before it happened & diags say that a hose (or two) has failed.
Check ALL the hoses chap-on the 2.2s if one of the vacuum ones associated with EGR/pollution control or the electrovalves/swirl diaphram fails it can bring this on as well, let alone a big turbo or i/c one. Your oil level might well be low because the turbo dumped a load into the intake rather than air although if it was runaway there would have been vast amounts of smoke out of the exhaust-enough not to be able to see anything in the rear view. Incidentally if it really does let go turning the ignition off won't stop it. Either stall as said or use something to block the air intake. Otherwise it'll keep revving at max until it seizes, catches fire or blows up. See youtube clips on this-it's not funny.
the above will relate to a 2001 2.2HDI 136BHP GTX. VIN: VF38EHXF..Estate. In red. Yes it's FAP & Eolsys too. Deep joy. Now dead.
Thats got me worried and confused how much danger am i in with this turbo buisness? i know the poster mentions 2.2 where i have a 2.0 110 and i've also seen him mention on another thread that its unusual to cook a turbo unless it's a 2.2.
Is there a way of checking myself? or is this a job for a pro? it happened twice last week but only happens when the wife is driving and she just pulled over switched off and no problems for the rest of her journey.

id go for the top pipe easiest one,
ithink if turbo was on its way out you wouid know by the noise,
you shouid get a nice low pitched whistle sound on the 110s
The over reving couid be the cable, check theres abit of slack in it and returning freely
if too tight just pull the clip out and adjust,
You say low pitch whistle good or bad? i remember Quentin Wilson saying on fifth gear ages ago that a turbo whistles when it's on its way out but both turbo cars i've had have had a lovely sounding low pitch whistle?

The xsara ihad , had the same low pitched whistle sound,
that was a low mileage, unthrashed 110, took abit more than the 406 to get the sound of the turbo but that was pulling alot less weight,
Its only the 90s ive heard that dont do it,
