406 locking.png
hi, the crankshaft locking hole is Mainly for locking off the crankshaft
for Timing up the Engine,

Iwoudnt Recomend locking it off to Remove the Crankshaft pulley This Way, You couid end up with problems if what ever you use to lock it off with Breaks,

The timing hole is located behind the starter motor,

see number 6 on the pic,

Cheers LOZZ, Obviously only ever having Transits thought it would be simple, I'm an ex plasterer we can only drive white Tranies!! As it happens I'v just come in after getting the bolt out and pulley off using the JASPER method its a deperate method and not recomended by the AIRCRAFT ENGINEER who I read online this morning but it worked for me, Just read your advice and will be using it to re-tighten the bolt, Thanks very much for taking the time to advise me. Ken (not-so grumpy old get anymore)P.S. Just joined this site today I have a feeling I will be using it in the future. I have a 406 HDi 2.0 110hp 1999 SEPT and having looked at the site forum there is plenty of demand for people like you even more demand for transits!! Once again thanks a lot. Ken

I have a fool proof method of undoing the crank pulley bolt....

Place a 22mm socket on a breaker bar and place the breaker bar against the driveshaft/subframe, turn the ignition key and shock the bolt free.

Make sure nobody is near the breaker bar when you turn the key in case it flies off.

You can see this in action here......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_6SFBg7_dg

I've used this method many, many times over the years, it has never failed.

You don't need to disable the ignition.

As always, be careful and remember that safety is paramount.
