Cambelt Snapped - Happy Christmas eh!

Post by pugmania »

What is there that can cause a newish (6 months and 12k miles since being changed) cambelt to snap ? Are there any other items that can seize that might have caused the carnage ? The car is a 2002 (52) Hdi 90 406. I've not had the head off yet but when I do it'll be a mess I would imagine. It went at 95 MPH so it won't have been a gentle failure!

Any advice or info on good recon engine sellers would be welcome and any ideas on pricing!

Happy Christmas all!

Andy
The car is gutless and slow, but is perfect for my 160 mile a day round trip commute! So much more refined than the trains.

Perhaps one of the pulley wheels was defective? Did you change any when the belt was changed? How about the tensioner?

If they were all replaced, it could be a faulty belt or, just over strain. 95mph is quite fast. Do you gun it a lot?

A grand would pay for the repairs I s'pose Foxy!!! (any relation to Foxy on UK-MKIVS forum?)

Only the belt was changed by the garage (that is owned by a relative) that sold it to me - although they outsourced the work to another garage that knows Pugs - apparently! :|

Do I cane it ? Its an HDi 90 - of course I cane it!!! Our Leon PD150 (Revo'd to 190) makes it feel sooooo slow! I don't cane it to a level I'd call abuse but it does 160 miles a day at 80-85 MPH as an average with the odd journey one way at 90 ish and rarely upto 95 - on a private dual carriageway between home and London.

tensioner incorrectly set.... belt slipped then sheered and snapped ! or just too darn tight... I'd get it in to peugeot, as you could get all your work done for free under the sale of goods act! yes this covers services too which is what you have paid for, do you have an invoice from this garage?

Cheers Niz. The problem is that the garage is in Mansfield and I'm in Colchester and until I can confirm what killed it for definite I'm a little in limbo. The engine is being dismantled tonight for a good look and we'll see what comes out of that. If it looks like I'm able to prove a mistake on their part I'll be on their case.

I've read up on the bottom pulley issue and I'll check for other seized components as when they changed the belt they only changed the belt and nothing else - I suppose that's what happens if you leave it to the dealer to arrange rather than booking it in for yourself. None of the work was performed by a Pug dealership. If it is their fault, I'll name and shame if I have any grief from them!

Cheers for the advice etc chaps!

All you need to do is look at the condition of the tensioner, also look at the way in which it is fitted... do not remove it before photographing all parts as they are fitted / adjusted on the car... including the crankshaft pulley!

You need to seriously stick it to them and get your money back and a new engine if possible! Hell I'm no mechanic but even I can do a belt and tensioner without fooking it up....lol :D

Got to the bottom of it all......... got the head back on (no damage to pistons or valves), new rockers and tappets in, new tensioners on, bottom pulley wheel changed and belt fitted. Tried to turn the engine by hand - not a chance. Moves about 5 degrees then something metallic hits. After about an hour of messing around with timing we realised that something had seized...... the bloody main diesel pump!

Shifted the fuel filter out of the canister thing that it sits in and there was "glitter" in the fuel. Looked a bit further at the main diesel pump that's driven from the cambelt and what do you know........... the safety caps (or whatever they are at 12, 4 and 8 o'clock) have been literally blown off, snapping the bolts that hold them in. The pump completely siezed. The only solution is a new pump at £514 +VAT from your friendly Pug stealer or £375 +VAT recon. At those prices I decided that a new one isn't that much more with a decent warranty on it and peace of mind. So pump ordered for Tuesday and then I really hope that this is the end of the problem.

Total cost of fix = £1100. Ouch!!

Be careful to purge out all the fuel lines in case any bits are in there.

The injectors cannot deal with even the smallest of particles.

I suppose you could have got a second hand complete engine really, they're quite often on ebay :|

a second hand engine is too risky as you will most likely end up with a fudged lump, or a crappy one

remember when replacing the high pressure pump always replace the pump to common rail pipe otherwise it will leak a hell of a lot

Finally back on the road yesterday. Running OK (idle still lumpy as i was before the problems) but sweet when driving along.

Cleaned as much of the "glitter" out as possile but will have to rely on the fuel filter to catch whatever's left in the system. I'll have a look tonight after my 160 mile round trip commute today and see how much is in the filter housing. I'll change the filter again at the weekend too.

Not sure whether to bail out of this car now or keep it! I'm in two minds as I need to sort out the lumpy idle (it'll shake the whole car its that bad) and I'm a bit nervous as to what that could be and I don't want to spend out much more on the thing.

Any thoughts or advice ?
