thought so thank you stupid haynes manual only shows images for 2.1 except for little drawings which make no sence its safe to say i need a aux belt do they do damage if they snap on you ??
In theory they shouldn't, they only drive the PAS pump, alternator etc.
However on the XUD engines they have a habit of flying into the timing belt and causing it to jump some teeth or come off altogether, so best to get it done.
It's normally recommended to replace the idler and tensioner whilst you're changing the aux belt - the tensioners wear over time and lean, and can eventually throw the belt off. This happened to mine, but luckily it didn't touch the timing belt since the engine was only idling and out of gear when the tensioner failed completely
Edit: in fact, the idler pulley looks extremely out of alignment in your picture. Is that just the camera angle?

that was lucky okay shall have a look price up i can see me paying out a lot of money soon lol but i must say i love the car its very pleasant to drive, and i have heard these cars just keep on going so got to be worth the investment
That looks wrong to me but I'm sure someone with more knowledge will confirm. I don't think the idler leans, only the tensioner, so maybe it's not a problem. How many miles has the car done? Mine failed at about 205,000 miles.

your a star i have been looking all over google for this all day thank you very much i can say this when the car is idleing the belt does seem to be wobbley kind of like its throwen off slightly
Mine failed at 92 000 but it was 14 years old it looks like u need a new tensioner in ur pic

okay i shall get it replaced when i can i have a feeling the belt is going to snap very soon, i got a haynes manual and it looks complicated because theres no pictures for reference on the 1.9 just the 2.1 so i have no idea where to start.
the engine is completely covered in pipes and wires and i know if i take them off the chance i wont know how to put them back on

Can't view the pic of your engine at work but the aux belt change is pretty straight forward on the 1.9.
There are diferent tensioners for A/C and non A/C, non AC is easy but the A/C one is a bit of a knuckle scraper as it runs through the cam belt and fixes on the fuel pump side IIRC.
I'd recomend doing both belts at the same time as it should give you more room and also do the water pump leaking or not, if it does go you've got to take everything back off again, plus if it siezes it'll take your cam belt out with it. Well worth the £40 for a new pump!!! Plus a coolant flush and change at this time of year doesn't hurt.
There's a good vid on you tube of a 306 1.9td cam belt change, slightly different ancillaries but same engine. That and the haynes should make it a diy job. Search 'XUD cam belt change' on you tube.
You'll need a torque wrench, decent socket set with breaker bar and a trolley jack and stands. I think the haynes lists the locking bolt sizes which saves buying a kit.
The Haynes is pretty good once you've identified all the parts and it is a 1 man job but a second pair of hands is good for routing belts, passing tools, following instructions and putting the kettle on.
Mine is overdue but I'm waiting for a spare couple of hundred quid to appear in my bank account and a free weekend!!!

mate if it was my car i would put a cambelt kit and water pump on a new belt can take out your old water pump so you should always change it and 1.9 and 2.1 with aircon or without are the same apart from the cam belt tensioners are different

okay i will make sure all parts are done i came across the youtube vid it was going to be my next post something along the lines lol it seems everyday i drive the car something else dies i know its off topic but the damn air blower has gone it just died making a nouse by the glove box not sure if its a fuse or something else thats going to cost more money
