2001 406 110 HDI Estate - lack of powerish

My 406 2001 on a Y plate has done 256142 mies and has, to me, a weird problem.
The foot throttle is very sliuggish and takes its time to reach speed, good for economy.
Yet if you accererate using the cruise control, I get a powerful acceraration as if you have put your foot down with no problems.
Thoughts please.
This car is new to me and is the first "Fly By Wire" computer controlled car.
I prefer points, condensers and distributors or rotary injection pumps.

The first thing i would check would be the throttle cable, there is a clip to adjust it as it can stretch over time.
Pull up the slack and adjust the clip and see how it goes

The throttle cable has no slack in it.
When I throttle up from idle in neutral the revs go up normaly.
It just when normally driving and i put my foot down there is a big lag in accereration.
if I slowly put on the power the speed does increase, eg; I cannot shift down and put on a spurt to overtake yet i can cruise at motorway speeds comfortably the computer showing around 48 to 50mpg at 80.
When using the cruise control going down a hill there is no power applied yet when going up a hill the acceleraration is powerful, as I would expect for a 2ltr motor when you put your foot down.
I have not looked into how the cruise control works but would imagine it works on manifold vacuum somehow.
Would an split vacuum or air hose give an accelaration fault via the foot throttle?

It's entirely controlled by the engine ecu - it simply adjusts the fuelling to maintain set speed in the same way it should in response to throttle position sensor input, (which is why people are suggesting that's at fault).

Do you know anyone with a PP2000 system who could tell you quickly if the TPS data is OK?

(If you haven't already, mention your location - someone nearby may help).

I had this on mine. I took the TPS off, cleaned it's insides with WD40, and it's been very good since. Worth a go for no money spent.

sorry, been away and not near my Pc.
I am in huntingdon where the A1 and A14 intersect.
I will try dissasembly and cleaning on Saturday and let you know the results.
That along with replacing the rear brake discs, shoes and pads.

It has just had its MOT yesterday at 256000 miles, so the running in period has just about finished anyway.
