CLUTCH & FLYWHEEL
JUST BEEN TO GARAGE THIS MORNING WITH A SUSPECTED CLUTCH RELEASE BEARING ON THE WAY OUT,NO SOONER HE SAID THAT HE GAVE ME A QUOTE OF £700,I DONT KNOW WHY HES MENTIONED THE FLYWHEEL BECAUSE I WOULD CHANGE THE CLUTCH AND BEARING AS A MATTER OF COURSE,I HAVE A DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL ON MY 406 RAPIER AND ALL I WANT TO KNOW IS IS IT ESSENTIAL TO CHANGE THE FLYWHEEL AND SECONDLY COULD I REPLACE IT WITH A SINGLE FLYWHEEL.MY CUTCH DOES JUDDER IN 1ST GEAR WHEN PULLING AWAY BUT IT DOESNT SLIP AND CHANGES GEARS FINE,ITS JUST THE MATTER OF THE BEARING MAKING NOISES WHEN PRESSED,ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED,I DONT LIKE THESE GREASE MONKEYS GETTING THE BETTER OF ME.
Re: CLUTCH & FLYWHEEL
The mechanic is saying to change the clutch and flywheel because the gearbox is off you may aswell do it anyway so as to save opening it up again if the flywheel goes in the future. Id say 700quid is way over the top! Im fairly sure I've seen replacement clutch kits with solid mass flywheel conversions for around 350 on ebay. and im fairly sure that 350 in labour for a clutch change is a rip off. If this quote is from a main dealer then im not surprised but plenty of independent garages out there would gladly do the work for much less I'm sure.
Also, the 406 flywheel is generally not considered prone to failure. Most people who own 406 110hdi' get well over 200k mile on a flywheel and some get more than that! So if your car has relatively low mileage and especially if alot of those miles are motorway, then you may just want to replace the clutch kit only

Re: CLUTCH & FLYWHEEL
hi thanks for reply, ive seen plenty on ebay for the 110bhp but none for the 90bhp,its a tricky one really because they wont know the condition of flywheel until gearbox is off,the price i got was from croxdale fast fit.

Re: CLUTCH & FLYWHEEL
I'd agree with keppler. If you know beforehand all the bits are readily available, it is possible to drop the box and measure the play in the DMF, then decide to:
a) if DMF's ok, just fit an OE clutch kit
b) if it's not, then EITHER fit a new DMF / clutch kit OR solid flywheel conversion according to choice.
If it's any help, the parts only cost to replace my 2.2's DMF / clutch complete + bottom engine mount bush + diff oil seals and a sloppy drop link was just over £300

2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Re: CLUTCH & FLYWHEEL
If your 406 is a 90 bhp it dosent have a DMF'
you shouid only need a clutch kit,
the kit for the 90s is not expensive, iwouid go find another garage if iwhere you,

Re: CLUTCH & FLYWHEEL
well damage is now done, had car on drive today to do a service, got in to it for a drive and clutch has gone, ive been searching ebay allday for clutch and flywheel and nearly all of them were for the 110 bhp models,i even emailed these sellers and was told they didnt have clutch for a 90bhp 406 with a flywheel.
Re: CLUTCH & FLYWHEEL
They wont list one because, fly wheel isnt part of the clutch kit on a 90bhp.
the 3 peice kit for the 90s is Friction plate, release bearing and preasure plate,
if you need a fly wheel and idont see why you will have to buy it sepratly its not part of the kit,
type in peugeot 406 clutch kit on ebay and the 90 kit will be listed
iseen them on there last night,
the prices where 40 -90 quid, the cheaper ones are refurbed friction plate's.

Re: CLUTCH & FLYWHEEL
ye the 90's don't have a dmf so you wont get one from any where, i would go to a different garage as the one you went to is trying to pull the wool over your eye and fleece you for more moneys
you will never need a fly wheel as you can get single mass fly wheels resurfaced unlike dmf
p.s . i am the only one round hear with a 90 engine and a dmf
