Clutch help
Recently my clutch pedal has been releasing at different lengths. Assuming it was a clutch although hoping not I changed the slave cylinder and although now releasing to where it should there is still a rattle coming from the gearbox. When I purchased the car everyone was quick in telling me that because it was a 90 the clutch was cheap to repair however now it would now appear that the 90 is the one with the DMF making it anything but cheap. Can anyone confirm the flywheel is in fact dual mass and if so would it definitely be advisable to replace with clutch?

I can tell you with absolute certainty that the 90 does NOT have the dual mass flywheel.
If the rattle is there when you press the clutch then you may need a new release bearing and therefore a new clutch....if the rattle stops when you press the clutch all the way down then the gearbox is the problem...check the oil level first.

Re: Clutch help
It's booked in for the morning for a new clutch. The rattle is there when car is driving (obviously in gear) and when the car is idling out of gear. When you rev the car out of gear the rattle gets louder. It sounds like a moving part for defs, however I'm really not that knowledgable when it comes to French cars. When you push the clutch in the rattle doesn't go away but it does die down a bit. So are you suggesting I need a gearbox? I thought when the gearbox decided to give up it made a whining sound

Not suggesting you need a gearbox, just saying what happens when you press the clutch......wouldn't matter what make of car it was.
The rattle could be absolutely anything, only listening to the rattle will give me an idea of what it might be.....a proper diagnosis is required.
Gearbox bearings can rattle as well as whine, especially on tickover with lack of oil, pressing the clutch stops the gearbox input shaft (which carries the clutch) from turning, hence quiet when clutch is pressed.
The clutch release bearing is under pressure when you press the clutch so if you get a rattle when the clutch is pressed then the bearing is chief suspect.
As above, a proper diagnosis is required.

Re: Clutch help
I really appreciate your help and I'll definitely let you know tomorrow how I get on. I was told by a man in a part store yesterday that in various peugeot and citroen cars that there is a sleeve around the gearbox shaft that the thrust bearing passes over which causes a problem. Unfortunately as I'm not that experienced I don't know if he's right or not!!! What you say definitely makes sense so I may now hope and pray this isn't the case. I'm fitting the full clutch as I reckon once the gearbox is removed there's no sense in not doing, taken that its not overly expensive!!!

On the ML5 gearbox (taken from a V6 with about 190k on the clock) it looks like this:Volvoturboman wrote:I was told by a man in a part store yesterday that in various peugeot and citroen cars that there is a sleeve around the gearbox shaft that the thrust bearing passes over which causes a problem.

About £17 from the dealers IIRC. As you can see, there's not much to get knackered, although it could be the release bearing at fault... Good luck with the clutch change - hope it cures it for you

Re: Clutch help
Clutch kit, that sleeve, a new fork and the slave cylinder all replaced. Clutch definitely needed replace as the thrust bearing was making its way through the pressure plate. However rattle still there??? I'm only noticing the post about the bottom pulley, I know these are dodgy on the 110's are they also on the 90's?

Re: Clutch help
Yes, they're the same part. However, service box says SINGLE DAMPING PULLEY since pro 09338 (03/05/2002), whereas before it's described as DOUBLE DAMPING PULLEY. My car was manufactured March that year, and the pulley was replaced in 2008 at about 130k.Volvoturboman wrote:...bottom pulley, I know these are dodgy on the 110's are they also on the 90's?

Re: Clutch help
I'm starting to think it's definitely a part which must be replaced after the 10 year mark
