Hdi hesitating

Post by hammerman »

Right here goes.A few months ago my hdi 110 started to hesitate under accerlation.Maybe once a week it would feel flat for a second, then would take off.Anyway, after being parked up for a week & a half while we were on holiday, the problem was worse.About 50% of the time the car would feel & accerlate fine, the other 50% it felt as if someone had put the brakes on,or pulled the intercooler pipe off.I changed the fuel filter last sat,& had metal bits in the housing.Over the years I have had bit in the filter housing but not this bad.Took the car out & the problem was still there. Then I cleaned my k&n air filter which was quite dirty.Problem gone, car feels quick & responsive.Lovely I thought.Untill today.Coming home from work tonight it was terrible at times.Put my foot down to overtake etc, hardly any extra oomph, then bang,it would take off.Even when its misbehaving,it still revs past 3K,so its not as if limp home mode is activated. There is no eml light on,no excessive smoke, mpg according to the display is spot on,it starts perfect,& runs smooth.I`m thinking maybe the lift pump is getting lazy.Going to try the egr blanking trick tomorrow.
Anyone any other thoughts. :)
182k miles now,all original pumps,injectors etc

Not sure, but I think if your lift pump was playing up, it would generate a fault, (something along the lines of 'fuel pressure regulator faulty'). The ecu will record that it cannot get the requested fuel rail pressure, despite activating the pressure regulator in the HP pump. This should generate an EML, but it may clear itself after a few journeys.

Pure guesswork here, but maybe TPS or MAF playing up would be more likely. If it were a 2.2, you would also suspect vacuum system problems as the turbo is vacuum actuated, but maybe 2.0's are not immune to this either?

Hi mate, try swapping the pipes and connections on the electrovalves on the bulkhead ( remember which is which though ) to see if it perks up. A cheap way to eliminate it, then try cleaning the throttle sensor.

Both free to do..!!

Right,i think I`ve sorted it thanks to the other post.Drove to morrisons this morning about 3 miles away.Car felt fine,or so I thought.Coming back the engine started to hesitate & hold back.I pulled over, disconnected the maf sensor,& wow  Torque steer back in 1st & 2nd gear, pulls like a banshee, spins the tyres in 2nd when cornering, feels like 140 bhp again instead of 60 bhp.
Just fitted my new cv joint to cure abs light, taking it out for a drive & it feels quick & responsive.Although 2 times it took a split second to pick up when I floored it,but the maf is still disconnected,so I don't know if that makes any difference???But overall it feels much better than it has done for months. It feels like I`ve just had it re mapped so must have been playing up for a while. Will running without the maf connected do any harm???I wont be able to get one till next week, but they are about £35 on the bay.

Hammerman i had the same problems here and a second hand MAF sorted the problems no worrries..

I ran the taxi for about a month with the maf disconnected just trying to diag a fault that i still have. The first one i tried was oem off the shelf from a friendly part company and it actually made it worse, The second was a 2nd hand part from ebay and that made it better but still not quite right so a visit to a breakers yard i took it off and put it on my car there and then and the rest was history.

the pug is back in action but on the local race track it only pulls to 90 and thats flat out and slighly down hill

give the maf a try if its running good with the present one disconnected. the mpg is better with a working maf than with it not working as the ecu uses a defaut set of settings for temp and flow rather than the real readings.

I took mine off at the weekend & cleaned the sensor thingy with some brake cleaner.I did notice the metal gauze inside had a large hole in it.I ran it till weds to work(35miles each way)disconnected and only once did it hesitate). As I leave the quarry where I work its onto a fast A road & the quarry entrance is in a dip so its a case of pulling out & flooring it as the road bends & you get a car come round the corner up ya arse fast.So anyway I reconnected the maf before I left weds eve,& as I pulled out onto the road a car came round the corner.I floored it & nothing  flat as a pancake.Since the the car is fine 80% of the time,so it must be the maf.

Got my new maf yesterday.£63 from gsf(a rip off as I reserved it online but picked it up instore they wouldn't take my 10% discount card :x )Any hows, fitted it and the car feels like new.Better than it has for ages.So even though it felt better & faster without the maf connected, now it feels even better.Very surprised how its transformed the car.Its fast now  Throtle response is instant,& before, the engine would run out of steam around 4k rpm,now in 1st & 2nd it pulls round to 5k rpm in now time.
Also had my cam belt, tensioners, waterpump & crank pully done this week too,so no worrys about that anymore. The old belt looks as good as new with no signs of cracking,& the crank pully looks good for 10yrs old & 183k.
