How do I find out what bore my exhaust is?

Post by Sonia406 »

Hi everyone :D

Want to know what bore my current exhaust is.
I've looked on service box and can't find out.
Even Mr Haynes is being unhelpful.

I want to replace the backbox with something else, so need to know what bore my exhaust is so I can find out what will fit and what will need an adjuster.

I think it may be 2.5inches / 63.5mm but I got that information from an unreliable source, so wondered if anyone knew for sure what I'd have.

It's a 2.0 16v 5 door family estate (2001)

Cheers in advance

If you are able to accurately measure the circumference..........

Say if it measures 179mm, then divide by 3.142 to give 56.97mm (diameter) then divide by 25.4 to give inches - in this case 2.25" or 21/4" (about the length of Puggy's penis for example).

I don't think yours will be 2.5inches more 2 or 21/4"

Ah, don't worry mate, it's not what you got...

Use a piece of paper to measure it (the exhaust that is), wrap it around, mark where it crosses over & then measure that. Much easier than using a tape measure...

for measuring other things I personally always multiply the measurement by 1.5

Don't want to rain on your parade, but measuring the circumference is gonna get you the outside diameter, not the bore.

I was wondering when someone would spot that [/Cptn. Mainwaring] :cheesy: What is the thickness of the metal they use to make these pipes, couple of mil? Do you think it'll put the calculations out by much? :?

Shouldn't matter anyway, because if you plan on removing the back box & replacing it, your replacment pipe will idealy have an internal dia the same as the external dia of your pipe work :P , i.e : 60mm o/d std pipe work then 60-62 i/d replacment back box @ the join anyway. That is if you are using a u clamp for the join & not welding it
If you go down the u clamp route make sure you use a smear of exhaust ass paste on final ass, as this will expand with the hot gasess & make sure you have a gas tight seal 8)
Hope this helps. :cheesy:
