XUD Tuning

Post by Nightshade »

Ok, so I know there's a lot of info on tuning xud engines. I've never been bothered before, but since towing a caravan about, I've been thinking that a little more grunt wouldn't go amiss.
Usual place to start is to up the pump fuelling, however I'm reluctant to start with the evil anti tamper plate. A diesel mechanic I know recommended pulling the pump right off the car to tackle it - just for ease of access. I don't fancy that much.
However this guide on 306.net includes advancing the pump timing.

That got me thinking: Firstly, what will advancing the pump do in terms of performance? anything?
Second, which direction will advance it anyway?

Hi chap - I saw a video on youtube of a guy doing the fuel pump thing when fitted to his car, looked relatively straightforward but worth a look.
Can't remember the link off hand but try 306 fuel pump in you tube search.

How does it work? No idea, sorry

the thing to check is if its a Bosch or Lucas pump as they have two different method of tuning post up a pic of it and we can tell you which one it is

the mention of anti tamper plate makes me think it a lucas set up so the link you posted is not relevant

I don't think you'll find a 1.9 TD 406 with a Lucas pump.

I would leave the timing as is and go for the boost compensator and the star nut you will feel it more

yes its for a land rover but thay have the same setup and will give more low engin speed torque

There is no point advancing or retarding the pump as it will bring on the EML. The ECU controls the fuel pump timing.

If you remove the intercooler pipe and a few other odds and ends and buy a 90degree drill chuck then you can get the plate off while it's still in place. I know, I done it!
