Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick - ( Hopefully not Boom ) !!

Post by Waxman »

Meh !

After 1.5k mileage in my ownership, Just starting to enjoy the 406 and understand what it does and doesn't like doing.

After treating it to the clean of it's life and fit her with new brakes, tyres, full service and a few other bits, - she decides to throw a hissy fit and come back at me with a rattly/ticking Crankshaft Pulley.

Just over the last few days, so hopefully will get it done next week when I have time - maybe do another 100 miles in between now and then. - Ticking/Rattling not over loud but there for sure.

Do these things go Boom ? - i.e is it best to park it up and seek an alternative set of keys in between now and then ?

If it is the crank pulley then yes, best not to drive it. If it throws the belt off there's a good chance it'll take the timing belt with it...

You really don't want the belt to come off, I've had this happen to my 306, in Lyon of all places. Oh, and it was on the main road in a tunnel at rush hour.

Anyway, it's no big job, as long as you have the correct tools (really good breaker bar and an assistant, some scaffold tube may be required) so I'd get it done ASAP

if you know for sure it's the crank pulley i would change it asap ,not uncommon to suck the belt into the timing case and either snap the belt of jump a tooth.

Well the noise that it's just starting to make ( more relevant coming from lower/middle O/S/F wheel arch, combined with a internet/youtube diagnosis ) is pointing to exact that fault.

Ok, will park it up and get it booked in.

Thx for your replies all

When mine started going it rapidly got worse to the point that the noise was so bad you knew you shouldn't drive it - it sounded real bad. I still nursed it along the 10 miles to the garage though :supafrisk:

New crankshaft pulley fitted 8)

Now just the oh so normal noise of an Hdi 110 engine rattling away. Back to normal.

Job done, thanks for the advice all.
