Front crank oilseal

Post by Quinny »

Can the oil seal be changed by just taking the bottom pulley(s) and cover off, and loosening the belt, or is it a major stripdown?

Could do with it changing, but don't fancy removing just about everything.

Do you mean the front or rear seal?
If you meant the rear, as in your title, the gearbox, clutch and flywheel will have to come off.....

If it's the front, as you appear to be describing, then the cambelt has to come off and cam pinion removed before you'll even see it I 'm afraid.

Sorry, it is the front, the one at the cambelt end. Doh!!!

Can it be done without a full stripdown though?

Well, you'd have to define what you call a full stripdown I suppose!
In my book, taking the belt and pinion off is not a full strip down, just bl**dy annoying to get to a poxy seal!

It's a full cambelt job plus removal of bottom crank pulley that carries the timing belt.

Bugger. That's what I thought.

If it were that simple, that's what I'd do.

That's why I replaced mine just for good measure whilst changing the cambelt, it looked fine but had done 82k & was 11 years old.
I had noticed a lot of pictures/ threads on this topic where at 130-145k they were leaking & looked like they had been for some time  .
Well worth it I.M.O for the sake of ten more minutes & £14 inc vat from the main steelers
